Artist Statement:
The joy of exploration, and the beautiful places and things that exist only because no one cares enough to get rid of them drive my work. As a boy, I was in love with the debris in the woods and unattended construction sites. Finding abandoned cars was like finding a relic – a relic that had been left for future demolition, like a gift or sacrifice to all who pass.
The purpose of my work is to depict characters unconcerned with the barrenness that wreckage and isolation can embody. These are interactions fueled by the freedom of being alone and the seductive aura that resonates from the dirty.
While in school, Detroit’s downtown was home. I was inspired by the muted colors of industry and how they were reinstated by the long overcast winters. It was a sprawling collection of deserted factories and high-rises. The textures I found in these places –torn hotel curtains, collected mounds of burnt tires left by derelicts, trees growing in libraries- have infiltrated my work.
