Biography
Gregory was raised in rural California where he found amusement with machines and building. Showing early aptitude in science, he spent time observing the weather, the garden, and animals. He enjoyed making things with his hands and read every book at the library on electricity and machines. He built numerous small outbuildings or forts and tree houses. He is from a family of writers, which cultivated his love of poetry. After two years studying marine biology, he found more interest in observing, than in analyzing creatures. A film class reopened his interest in the world of art. He enjoyed tinkering with the machines for shooting and making film, and eventually connected his poetic sensibility with the frame of a film. He moved to San Francisco and earned a degree from the Art Institute. He Painted and drew during this time, building his visual language and relationship with color.
While working in San Francisco he met his wife, June, with whom he has three children. During this time he worked as a cabinet maker, beekeeper and builder. After discovering the work of Rudolf Steiner, he and his wife became Waldorf teachers and moved to Vermont to become the founding teachers at a new school. Greg was a class teacher, and developed the woodworking program over 14 years. Teacher opened daily opportunities for blackboard drawings, wax drawing and watercolors. While teaching children to love woodworking, Greg created many original and traditional toys. Observing bees also influenced his cabinetry, which you can see in his designs of curved furniture. To supplement his salary, he learned the craft of candle and mold making, and sold beeswax candles and honey at the local farmers market. During summers, Greg renovated two old houses. After leaving teaching, Greg spent 14 months building a house by hand.
As there children grew older, Greg began to paint again in earnest. He studied with painter Ludmila Gayvoronsky for three years. After a residency at the Vermont Studio Center, he set up a studio in an old Woolen Mill building in White River Junction, Vermont. In addition to his painting, Gregory has a body of sculptural work. For the past four seasons he has studied figurative sculpture at the studio of Augustus Saint Gaudens with sculptor William J. Williams.
