Statement
My artwork is a response and witness to the wars and violence of mankind. Fundamental to my work is my belief that we are essentially schizophrenic as a culture. In general the culture at large has seen itself as being separate from nature, even superior, separate from 'God' and thus inferior. As in the Iliad, the Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet the cultural arbiters have posited that man and specifically men are the lords of the earth with the rights of profit that this supposed ownership affords. Murder and theft are deemed the rights of power held by a few who see the rest as 'others' devoid of rights or sovereignty. Love is the folly of youth and subservient to power and the family/culture. In both this leads only to tragedy and loss of life. The destruction meted on others ultimately brings tragedy back on the houses of these lords of power. The only way out is for the hero to humble himself (king becomes 'no one,' Nemo, thus all) before nature/god and return to the one he himself truly loves.
