BIOGRAPHY
Jonathan Gitelson was born (1975) in Mount Kisco, NY and currently resides in Chicago, Illinois.
Jonathan received a BA in literature from Marlboro College in 1997 and completed his MFA at Columbia College Chicago in 2004. He is an adjunct faculty member at Columbia College, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and at The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).
Jonathan’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States, Canada and Europe and is in the permanent collection of various institutions that include The Museum of Contemporary Photography, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, The Milwaukee Art Museum, The Museum of Modern Art New York and The Albert and Victoria Museum in London. He is the recipient of the College Art Association’s Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Fellowship, The Puffin Foundation Fellowship and the City of Chicago Community Arts Assistance Program.
Throughout the past four years, Jonathan work has been featured in the exhibition, “Car Culture” at the Chicago Cultural Center and has received critical reviews in The Chicago Tribune (Alan Artner), The Chicago Reader (Fred Camper and Joanna Felts) and New City where he was named “Breakout Artist of the Year, 2006” by Michael Workman.
Jonathan’s work has been published in various publications including Camera Austria (Graz) and Intersection Magazine (London). He has also recently completed a permanent public art commission for the Chicago Transit Authority (Armitage Brown Line Station, May 2008) and was featured in an exhibition by The Museum of Contemporary Photography at the 2008 New York Photography Festival.
