BIOGRAPHY

A Perry, Georgia native, Whitney Wood received her Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta where she was awarded the Artistic Honors Fellowship for Graduate Study. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Auburn University and studied with UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art in Cortona, Italy. After graduation, she studied with Rhode Island School of Design at the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art in France. Upon returning to the US, Whitney moved to New York City to intern with Paul Kasmin Gallery and to study under painter Larry Poons. Her international art collaborations include working in Shanghai, China with a collective of New York and local Chinese artists, and an internship with international artist, Patricia Esquivias, in Spain, Germany and England. Whitney’s change in environment and culture has always been an important inspiration for her work. A recent nominee and finalist for the Atlanta based Forward Arts Foundation Emerging Artist Award for 2010, Whitney now lives and works in Atlanta, GA. Her work was featured on the cover of Carnegie Hall’s Playbill magazine for November 2008, and she was recently chosen for the "MOCA GA Salutes the Rising Movers and Shakers of the Georgia Art Scene" exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Atlanta.

Whitney- beautiful work! One of my students asked about your paintings so we were looking at your site. But the comment I wrote didn't post-it's probably good since I was at work! But it was a small class and they were watching too. Excellent and inspirational paintings! I've joined too many art site but never really networked on this one. Great work!!! Top notch! It is astonishing to see such artistic achievement and a travel record for such a young artist and a real privilege to such glorious creative work, beautiful to a high degree even in cyberspace. Your work is gorgeous and glorious. I hope that you will write a statement to discuss whatever you would like to so that your visitors can have that additional understanding when we visit to see the best that there is out there. I think you were very wise to travel particuarly to Italy, as you know, the place of places for seeing beauty and developing your potential for creating beauty. Just a note of caution, if there is a way to prevent others from downloading your images, I would suggest you choose that option. I know that there is software available and at certain sites the artist can choose that option. Americans artists and specifically, women such as yourself need to be brought forward with rewards and honors and attention and huge auction prices and prices for your work because it is sublime work that you are doing, and if this is what you are doing now, my question is: What will you be doing ten, twenty, thirkty years from now? I think you should consider writing something and your Masters would cover part of that, but beyond those efforts, you should write for younger artists and for artists as yet unborn who can benefit from your experience and your knowledge and huge talent in the intellectual and verbal levels. Put it on the backburner so to speak but it would be wonderful if you build on something in both areas for your followers and admirers :) to be able to follow. I think you and your work are awesome and so thank you, and thank you to MyArtSpace for bringing your sublime and rich painting forward. Joyce Dade .

Hello Whitney Wood, It doesn't get better than your work, it just doesn't. I am somewhat stunned by the beauty of your work, in the way a swimmer might be visually stunned seeing a beautiful stingray, hoping it just swims by but does not sting. There is a component of danger or a subtle intimation of that in your painting but so much the better. The expression "beautiful but dangerous," come to mind. To be so young, so well traveled, so inspired and inspiring is all to your credit. You deserve every bit of the huge success you obviously have coming to you and you do us Americans proud. Congratulations and thank you for your huge, magnificent talent. Have a wonderful summer! Jay .
