ARTISTS STATEMENT
The themes of my work, rendered in rich, yet recognizable abstractions, are both a celebration and serious commentary on what I find interesting in the world of relationship- human and non-human, between myself and the objects I encounter - bees, a friend sitting by a campfire, cinnamon rolls. After having traversed the deep South for over a decade, studying with various artists, furniture makers and a master boat builder, I settled in Tucson where my work has since evolved into a distinct series of paintings, mixed media pieces and 3-D light boxes.
What sometimes seems like random subject matter is often dramatically connected. One day I might examine the violent nature of bee colony dynamics-up close and personal-through magnifying lenses that pull the viewer into a private, sticky, honey-coated world. With the bold use of color and thick brushstrokes, I explore in deep, yet humorous ways, the mother/daughter relationship, ritualistically painting over actual pieces of my past in mixed media.
I invite you to take a keyhole look into my middle-American roots. That could mean whatever randomly happens to be on the dinner table on any given night- a vase of cheap flowers, a tub of Country Crock, leftovers perhaps?
