Brian, thanks for adding me to your friends network. I smiled as I read the first paragraph in the "About the Artist" section of your website. You stand at the start of a possible career. At 64 I stand at the other end of a career that didn't happen - much. I have hundreds and hundreds of artworks to show for the time and effort, but, as some knowing wag observed, "Until it's sold an artwork is just a storage problem." I have just spent an exciting and surprising day in my studio with a friend jointly creating drawings. Every day in my studio is exciting and surprising. I expect to spend many more. I wish the same for you, but I do have some bad news. You can't believe either the people who like your work or the people who don't like your work. Neither group can reliably mark your course. Only you can do that. It helps enormously to have someone who supports you as an artist, but that is different. I had a small art school for ten years here in Albuquerque. My students ranged in age from thirteen to eighty-two. Their abilities varied just as widely. My goal was to help get my students to where they wanted to be artistically. Among them were several who dropped out of art school because it was such a bad experience. I helped them develop their skills to do what they wanted to do. Why that's not the goal in art schools is hard for me to understand. Students were excited when their family and friends liked their work. I had to remind them not to rely on those positive responses, because it may happen that the better they got, the smaller their audience may become. Best wishes. (Tomorrow I’ll post today’s drawings here and on my blog.) .
