BIOGRAPHY
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Sanam Salek studied at University of California, Santa Barbara where she took on the unlikely double major of math and art. During her studies, in addition to differential equations and number theory, Salek worked with all types of artistic mediums including drawing, painting, graphic design, and video. It was during these four years of study where she developed her own distinctive medium: a mixed media involving nails, wood, and paint. In working with these rigid, durable objects, Salek aims to deconstruct our preconceived dialect of beauty and transform the human body in all its fragility to that of the stronger realm. Enticing the viewer to cross personal boundaries into this anti-classical methodology - where comfort is an option - Salek's inspiration from Egon Schiele comes into focus. Since graduating in 2003, Salek has continued to lead a similar double life, working in advertising while maintaining a strong relationship with photography, graphic design, and her latest passion, furniture design. Salek's connection to art continues to develop as the irony of life continues to thrive.
