i'm a self taught artist on all aspects but aren't we all.i mainly use acrylic paint for my pieces because they force me to work quicker.even with extender.i enjoy sculpting also and have been learning mold making, airbrush, and screen printing.i've painted on canvas, wood, masonite, metal and tile but my preferance for substrate is sintra.lightweight, carvable, bendable with lite heat, takes paint, ink, lead, screen printing ink, airbrush ink and i imagine other materials with ease.can make sculptural art with it also.shipping is phenominally cheap because of weight.it's win win in my eyes.to me the women i paint seem strong and assured.not afraid of prowess nor ellegance.uncompromised are their stature and power.these counterparts of ascension formulate reasoning and unreasoning amongst those who would seek them.seek we must though for gifts as they only come around 1000 lifetimes.i venture that i will always pay my little tribute to women of all regions of this world before my eyes and how they're translated through my optic swerves and processed and reproduced through constant learning.all hail these makers and breakers of hearts.

Maggie Bandstra
myartspace id:Newdoorstudio
BIOGRAPHY:
"When one door closes a new one opens" Maggie Bandstra's introduction to her life-long love affair with art began while visiting a friend's house at the age of four. This friend's mother had painted a mural on the floor of a bedroom (something Maggie would never have been allowed to do in her own home) and the image of the big, orange sun struck a chord in her. She didn't even really like her little friend whose home possessed the lovely mural, but she made up excuses to hang out with her and her mother. There was always something crafty to do at that house and Maggie was hooked. In the end the friend was dropped, but the love of art stayed. Throughout the years Maggie has changed her career goals, but has never strayed from her passion. At four she wanted to be an art teacher like her aforementioned friend's mother, figuring that if she could make a living out of creating a mess, that would be a solid plan. Maggie's new plan at 10 years of age centered around the Presidency of the United States, she thought anyone could do a better job than the man in charge. As the teenage years rolled on, Maggie thought she should become a fashion designer and then narrowed it down at 18 to becoming an elementary teacher. After a few years of actually being an elementary teacher, she decided that there was way too much paperwork and moved into becoming an art teacher, thus coming full circle and reinforcing the belief that we really do know some important pieces of who we are at a very young age. Turning 30 was an important eye-opening experience for Maggie, it caused her to stop and think about what she was good at and what was important to her. She knows she’s a better teacher because she is using her passion and instilling the love of art into children. Maggie has focused her art on oil paintings, children's murals, children's portraits, pottery, and most recently paper collages. Her oil paintings tend to be based around local landscapes and she is currently working on a series based on urban sprawl. Maggie enjoys creating children's murals for bedrooms and playrooms and children's portraits featuring exaggerated features. The pottery Maggie creates is influenced by the arts and crafts period. Maggie is very excited about her new endeavor, paper collages, which utilizes junk mail and papers and creates something useful out of something the majority of people throw away. The paper collage art is focused on how junk is taking over our world and is making something useful out of something people don't want but have plenty of. Finding a higher purpose in what she's creating is what drives Maggie and keeps her passion and excitement for art going strong. Maggie currently lives in Grand Haven, Michigan with her husband and son.

lynn jackson

BIOGRAPHY:
Toronto artist Lynn Jackson calls on old photographs, her mother's recollections and her own childhood memories to provide much of the inspiration for her prize-winning sculptures. Using textile techniques taught to her by her mother many years ago, coupled with her experience of goldsmithing and costume design, Lynn knits metal wire which, for some works, she combines with felted and dyed wool to meticulously recreate the birthday dresses, nightgowns, bonnets and booties she wore as a little girl. From recreating her childhood clothing it was a natural progression to the toys she played with and, working in her studio in downtown Toronto, she has used the same methods to produce intricately detailed sculptures of Tabitha Twitchit, Peter Rabbit, the Mopsey Bunnies, Raggedy Anne and other friends from her childhood. Although the work is nostalgically evocative, the appearance of fragility is deceptive, and her technique has won her awards at the Sculptors' Society of Canada and at the Toronto Outdoor Art Show, while winning critics' acclaim at exhibitions across Canada. Born in Canada of English parents, Lynn spent her formative years in both Liverpool and St. Catherines. She studied Costume Design at Niagara College Shaw Festival Theatre School and spent three years in the Jewellery Arts Program at George Brown College in Toronto, where she studied gemology and diamond grading. A talented jeweler as well as a sculptor, Lynn has created pieces for film projects including the jewellery worn by Lindsay Lohan in the movie Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, which is currently displayed in the Permanent Collection of the Disney Vault Museum. Suzanne Gee

BIOGRAPHY:
At the age of twelve, I was honoured to have my portfolio reviewed by one of Disney's 'nine old men', Eric Larson. He encouraged me to continue drawing, study art and go for it! Since earning a B.A. in Fine Arts from Cal State Northridge, I've worked for companies such as Universal Studios, The Disney Channel, Dick Clark, National Assistance League & The Musicians Union. These experiences showed me the benefit of creative problem solving. More recently I studied web design at UNLV and have since combined art, design, colour theory and internet technology into an exciting career. As a professional musician, I have helped my fellow musicians by creating unique band logos, designing CD covers & apparel illustrations for publicity purposes. Rock 'n' roll is the greatest influence on my art, and it's within this mindset that the Avant Fauves movement was born. By implementing both hand drawn illustrations & digital art, my pieces balance cutting edge graphics with the warmth of fine art. I thoroughly enjoy doing character studies of interesting personalities where the use of art brings out a depth of soul through portraiture. My roots are Celtic, but I was born in Puerto Rico and spent a portion of my childhood in Mexico - so I like my beer dark and my food spicy! ROCK ON

Kevin Coulton
myartspace id:kcoulton
BIOGRAPHY:
Artist Bio Kevin Coulton While growing up in a small town in Western New York, like most kids, Coulton spent a lot of time looking for salamanders and skipping rocks in the local creek. When the summers really got slow, he would make a point of kicking gravel into the storm drains as he made his way through the neighborhood. As fate would have it, Coulton now finds himself back in creeks, working as a registered water resources engineer to improve habitat for fish (and salamanders) and to estimate flooding on rivers and coastlines. And he's designed storm drainage systems and is now photographing the pollutants that enter them, to educate the public to the nature and prevention of storm water pollution. This unique blend of engineering and photography was fostered by Coulton's pursuit of bachelor degrees in Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture at Penn State University, followed by a Master's Degree in Hydraulic Engineering at Washington State University. Determined to maintain his varied interests, he published a masters thesis titled "Gauging Stream Flows Using 35mm Photography." His first published photographs also occurred during graduate school, appearing in several hydraulic engineering textbooks. As expected, water has become an overriding element in his photographs, whether they are abstracts or landscapes. Coulton's Pollution in Abstract photography has caught the attention of many people since he first took to the streets with his cameras and began documenting the insidious form of pollution that occurs at our feet. He has had his pollution photographs published in corporate publications, a national photography magazine, brochures and posters. This unique combination of art, science and human interest has also attracted the newspaper and television media, resulting in newspaper articles, several evening TV news stories and a promotional commercial for a children's environmental TV show. The increasing public attention to his pollution photography, and the ensuing public awareness change, is exciting for Coulton, as he is able to realize a unique opportunity to mesh his interests in photography and engineering, for the purpose of making people more aware of a significant pollution issue. The photographs are made using Kodachrome 25 and Fuji Velvia transparency film, Nikon camera equipment and a sturdy tripod. This type of photography can be dangerous. One photograph required a time exposure in a grocery store parking lot and nearly resulted in Coulton being backed over by a car as he crouched over his tripod! You can see more of Kevin Coulton's work at his website, kevincoulton.com.

bonaffini emmanuel
myartspace id:bonaffini
BIOGRAPHY:

Statement: I draw constantly. I see my art as an uninterrupted series of images, like individual frames in an ongoing movie. I chose some images to develop into more elaborate scenes. Since 2002 I have made large scale wood-block prints on canvas or paper. I often show the wood-block itself, the resulting canvas or large paper-print, and the series of drawings from where the imagery originated, together. The labor, the processes and the continuous flow of ideas are important aspects of my work. I reinterpret figures, situations and imagery from mass-media and literature to fit "my movie" and hope that I am able to create a coherent personal story that is of interest to others as well as me.

vydavy sindikat, Brooklyn based group experiment 1995-present, Brooklyn, New York. vydavy sindikat began with they launched a monthly publication (with 100 subscribers) and series of site-specific performances, one of which was a collaboration with the Russian poet Konstantin Kuzminskiy at the Knitting Factory. vydavy in Russian literally translates to "you and you". Paired with sindikat, the name is loosely translated as “you collective.” In 2000 vydavy sindikat developed a larger format publication involving more people. Influenced by Russian 20th century avant-garde poets and artists (Kruchenykh, Harms, Burluk, Rodchenko, Popova, and Hlebnikov to name a few) vydavy sindikat’s approach to art making is strongly linked to the tradition of DADA. Their contribution to Magazinnik literary magazine has been reviewed in the New York Times and their publications were shown in an exhibition entitled “18 x 24” at the Courthouse Gallery at Anthology Film Archives. In recent years, vydavy sindikat founders Yevgeniya Plechnkina and Misha Sklar have participated, on behalf of the collective, in architectural competitions. Most notably, they received Honorable Mention for their proposal to the Friends of the High Line, entitled “3P Unit, Park Prison and Pool”(2002) and a Jury Selection Prize for the “Groen Hoek: The East River Community Boathouse Competition” exhibited at the Center for Architecture of the American Institute of Architects (2003). In 2004 vydavy sindikat initiated the Public Gathering Project in an attempt to sum up the concept of group identity. vydavy sindikat is currently working on several different ongoing projects including a children's paper; the second phase of the Public Gathering Project which is addressing the idea of human assemblage; the vydavy workshop publication; and architectural competitions. vydavy continues to show their work in exhibitions like the d.u.m.b.o. art under the bridge festival (2006, 2005, 2004), “Float” at Socrates Sculpture Park (2005), “Slow Revolution” at the Rotunda Gallery (2006), “Computing the social” at the LMak Projects(2006), “Future Nomad” show at the Vox Populi Gallery in Philadelphia(2007). david macaluso
myartspace id:davidmacaluso
BIOGRAPHY:
After withdrawing from Parsons School of Design (New York) in 1994, I drifted into interests other than the visual arts. Aside from the occasional commission, sometimes a year would pass before I would pick up a pencil to draw. I remained unconvinced of the merits of pursuing a lifetime of art-making. As I was not a believer that "expression" was a pursuit as worthy as "seeking understanding" in life. And without "understanding", I thought, what is there worthy of expressing? And what's the point? About ten years later, in 2005, after years of searching for answers to questions that were becoming increasingly impractical, I circled back to my roots. Roots of a childhood where art was a centerpiece on the mantle of identity, as the thing for which I was always acknowledged. Roots that whispered of a family lineage of artistic talent mostly squandered for generations branching from the United States into the hazy distances of northern Italy, and a cloudy past I do not know. Yet from this faded ancestry, a few telling artifacts survived, a few paintings and drawings hung on the walls, like persistent voices that speak of legacy, like signposts pointing backwards ... and forwards. I decided to paint again that year, in mid-2005. In fact I determined to paint. And in so doing, my work would encapsulate my time and me. It would reach inward, outward, into this historical period and beyond it. I proceeded to paint fueled by a desire for art to be like a cell in the great organism of Life, from which I felt apart-- both integral to its being and a vehicle for discovering purpose, for finding a voice. The question for me became: How may I transmute the actual conditions of my life into an alchemy of images? In the beginning I looked at the world, as it swirled around me. Its motion is energy. Its lifeblood is oil. Motor Oil circulates through the engines of the world which transport lives, enable global commerce; and used motor oil is a by-product of vast processes both human and geological, I thought. Motor oil would become my metaphor for this time in world history: evoking the economic, political, social-- even psychological-- realities of today. A product of billions of years and great geological forces, petroleum is the energy foundation of modern civilization. And perhaps our over-reliance upon it ... a potential catalyst for demise. But between the beginning and the end, there is paper. And on that paper I daubed a brushful of used motor oil. My sketchbook of the time records the moment I conceived of painting with "car oil." It was a turning point that opened a floodgate of ideas. The medium of "used motor oil" became a sort of passageway, through which I took a first step in my personal re-direction toward a life of art. Today I continue to recycle used motor oil into paintings, as one medium amongst others in my work. A life's work now, that continues to seek the fundamentals, through a journey of expression.

I responded most to the idea of art as process. I don't usually sketch before painting, but rather apply paint and let the canvas develop, allowing paint and color to speak for themselves, looking and waiting to see what will happen. My paintings accumulate depth via layers of paint applied over time; sometimes I allow the history of the piece to show, sometimes I completely cover the surfaces, recycling image, paint, canvas, my own history. Some of the images take years to develop. I stop when I am satisfied the piece is resolved, but never foreclose the possiblity of painting over it again someday, begging the question, When is anything ever not changing?
