John J Shaver
myartspace id:ShaverJ
BIOGRAPHY:
As early as age 3 John J Shaver was drawing to interpret his world around him. Childlike doodles of heads with legs reflecting the perspective of always looking up at those around you at that age. John was born into grassroots poverty in Comox, B.C. to parents of the hippie generation. Imagination and creativity was encouraged in absence of toys and games. Using what was readily accessible to him at the time; a pencil and a scrap of paper or inside panels from books and cereal boxes John made his first pictures. A clean, white sheet of paper was a treasure to him at this age and a chance to play on it was a revered moment of his early childhood. He would often sit with his mother and they would together trace an image from a book or magazine. Marvelling at this ability to reproduce an image he would practise this avidly. Soon he was able to reproduce the image to his desired scale having learned to manipulate shapes and shading from many practised tracings. At age 6, his first year of school John drew his first picture of poignant memory, a unicorn. His picture which stood out so significantly won John J Shaver much praise from his peers and teacher. This encouragement was added to the foundation of his potential. Growing up as a child his family and friends continued to encourage him. John counted on their gifts of charcoal pencils and the large sketch books of white, heavy grain paper on every Christmas and birthday. To show his appreciation he would practise the landscapes and nature imagery his family was so fond of and give them as gifts. Continued support from his mother and father helped keep art as a main influence in his life. By the 6th grade new doors were opened for John and he had his first look into the world of art. Exploring images in books from the library and as a sixth grader he had full time access to the large and abundantly supplied art room of his elementary school. His art teacher saw a bright, young mind and challenged him with his gift by teaching him the way space can be used and how to engage this with the imagination. John first introduction into the world of colour came with his art teacher lending him a personal set of water colour pencils for a project. This helped to encourage him to do well in all upcoming art projects that year. Comic books were a very influential medium in John's teens. Admired above all other comic artists by John was Todd McFarlane. His unique and exacting depiction of the human form in characters like Spiderman and Spawn lent insight and influenced in his drawings at that age. Also Asian anime and Conan, Dungeons & Dragonesque themes were popular mediums extensively explored. High school came with opportunities to work with various mediums never before encountered. John devoted himself to delving into all of them. He left high school leaving a lasting mark. His design was selected for the new school logo and he was asked to paint the mural in the schools main entry, where it hung for many years before the schools recent renovation. Adult life somewhat eclipsed what had become an obsession. Still finding time in between a full work schedule and caring for his ailing mother John was busily sketching for friends and working on his growing portfolio. He married while still young and left his native Canada for Japan where his wife is from. Starting out in a new country meant practical means were necessary for supporting his growing family. For the next 3 years John found a niche in teaching formal and conversational English. With students varying from ages 8-80 he bridged the gap of understanding by employing his sketches in explaining words and phrases. When teaching in a classroom setting he would often draw up over 300 sketches a day. Here he helped refine his ability to use imagery to translate ideas. The wonders of Japanese culture; it's lush green mountains and crystalline lakes contrasted by the many sprawling metropolis's prevalent with the busy modernity and hustle of city life, the freshness of different landscapes and natural settings, and the uniqueness and complexity of many forms of Japanese art provided a new world of ideas and inspiration. Particularly attracted to the majesty of Mount Fuji many landscapes were rendered in pastel in an effort to capture its beauty in his own perspective. It was in Japan that John's first commission came from a night club in Kofu city. He was paid a modest stipend, the equivalent of a $100 to cover two of the clubs large walls in a hip-hop graffiti theme. Spray can art is a medium which John has excelled in for many years. A unique understanding of this particular culture lends his work in this area an authenticity and originality. Japanese anime, manga art, calligraphy, traditional tattooing, among many others were all influencing his art work at this stage in his life. The impression of his wife's culture was lasting and continued to resonate through his future endeavours. Returning to Canada 5 years after leaving for the East with a growing family John settled for awhile in Ottawa Valley. Back amongst the rich, beauty he had encountered in family visits earlier in life the adult artist now began to sketch again the vista's he had as a child. Within a couple years John returned to Vancouver where he has lived most of his life. Preferring its natural splendour and unique diversities he lives there with his wife and two sons presently. John has studiously delved into a myriad of differing art forms. No custom project is too big or small for this artist who encourages any challenge to his talent. John’s work is soon being featured in 3 upcoming gallery shows in White Rock and Vancouver.

Lilies and Ether is a peak inside the creative mind of one girl who is tormented with visions of the old world in her dreams. Most of her inspiration for her work comes from literature, music and especially 19th century way of life. Most importantly she always uses a female figure in all of her work and these are the girls who come visit her and tell her their story. This always seems all too familiar for her and usually their talks always have the feel of a long quiet chat with an old friend....

Mareen Haschke was born in Berlin (Germany) and has been living there ever since. She is a fulltime freelance artist. During her one year stay in the United States in 1991/1992 she intensively worked on her drawing skills, inspired by her great art teacher at Apopka High School in Florida. After her vocational training in Berlin, occupation as bilingual secretary, and starting a family life she has discovered her interest in drawing again. She has begun drawing with a pencil and then moved on to charcoals, sanguine crayons and last but not least to pastels. In spring 2006 she has begun painting with acrylics. her very first acrylic painting was created in April 2006, and is called "Of the Sea", inspired by the meaning and origin of her name. She has been selling her art on eBay since spring 2006. At this time she discovered those miniature artworks called ACEOs (Art Cards Edtions & Originals). These little Art Trading Cards are just 2.5" by 3.5" small. She has been creating such little pieces of art as well ever since. It has helped her to improve her painting technique regarding small details which she can very well use for her larger paintings as well. This portfolio shows only an excerpt from all the drawings and paintings she has made so far. If you would like to see her complete artwork you are very welcome to visit her at http://www.mareenhaschke.com

Having a Dutch father and a Romanian mother, it didn’t surprise me at all that I was born in one of world’s melting pot and meeting point: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. And although life, art and love brought me to distant places, for me Brazil has always been the place to be. As beauty has no frontiers, however, I’ve been living in other countries as well: Mexico, USA, Italy, China and, from 2003 onwards, The Netherlands. Our three children were born during this long journey. Beauty, indeed, is the thing I love most. But not beauty for beauty’s sake alone. From a very young age I felt that real beauty couldn’t exist without interior harmony. I’ve always tried to express this feeling in my works: graphic design, photos, silkscreen, stained glass and acrylic sculptures.
