Nancy Pirri (b. 1963) was born in Brooklyn, New York, and currently lives in Chicago, IL. She has dabbled in every art form since childhood, discovering clay to be her true passion in 1991. For the fifth year, she is represented as a House Artist at Studio B Gallery in Three Oaks, Michigan, and also Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ. She exhibits at many different venues including charities, and even curates her own group shows. Her work is about women and how they survive through time. She works in several different clay bodies utilizing techniques that result in 'aging' textures. Ceramic print techniques continue this 'antiquity.' She fires her work in atmospheric kilns including soda firing… transpiring her art further into history as if her pieces were buried underground for centuries.

I began painting in the late 60's when I lived in Chicago. I was a natural abstract painter, and I was mentored by a well know painter with a masters degree in art from Champaigne University. After divorcing my husband, I was left to raise my 2 children. Eventually Corporate America and raising children took up all of my time a zapped my creative energy. I retired out in Southern Utah near St. George, and fell in love with the red rock mountains, and all the varieties of color in the parks. I also adore painting my feelings about my environment on canvas. They are on my web site under Contemporay work.

BIOGRAPHY:
A Canadian artist, Gordon Milne was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1953. He attended McMaster University where he majored in printmaking and sculpture and graduated with a BFA in 1974. Early in his career Milne worked as a printmaker producing original drawings, etchings, woodcuts and linocuts that he exhibited and sold privately to individuals and corporations. During this period he was represented by Highstreet Gallery in Calgary and Paperworks Gallery in Vancouver. In 1982, while Gordon was in Australia, a devastating flood at Highstreet Gallery ravaged most of his artwork leaving little to show from the 70's. At this transition Milne shifted his attention to graphic design, founding Dream On Art & Design. While operating his design business Milne continued to work quietly and diligently on his own artwork splitting his time between the fine arts and the graphic design worlds. Milne's new studio practice altered his focus from printmaking to painting allowing him to explore the possibilities of a media and a subject matter he had not yet considered. Turning to a figure-based compositional foundation he began to consider complex relationships between men and women, sons and daughters, athletes and dancers, cross dressers and transgendered persons representations that reflect an intense examination of everyday life, of our varying lifestyles and of our place in the world. These portraits incorporate an intricate arrangement of different shapes and colours, all of which relate and interplay with one another subtly inviting the viewer to identify the subject's personality based on optical cues. These monumental portraits are Milne's biggest accomplishment and his trademark today. At present, Milne is working on a series of commissioned private portraits as well as portraits of dancers with the Alberta Ballet. He is also actively involved in the Sport Heroes Project a series of portraits of Canadian Olympians in association with the Canadian Sport Centre.

Since my childhood I felt the city is made of urban tracks connecting different points: house, daycare, work, friends. Each street had a spatial function and I chose a track within it according to my objective. My works, even the early ones, expressed a dialogue with space, with open places in which random tracks and human interaction integrate. I aspire to capture the individual in his own scenery and unveil the way he relates to it. In these current works I explore conflicts and different balances of powers. I cross the city while capturing the movement of the lines which break through the urban boundaries and draw new horizons in it. The material seems heavy and sealed. The relationships are reciprocal with a personal touch, Russian constructivist influence, exaggerated grayness, and a layer of concrete or blocked labyrinth.

BIOGRAPHY:
I am a real estate agent and a photographer, blending the two passions into the work you see. Selling condos and lofts, I am very cognizant of the pace of development in this city. I love seeing the conversion of an old factory into lofts - even more when I see the same joy in the face of a client viewing such a unit. The world is filled with structures, some forgotten and others well-loved. What stories do these buildings have to tell, what scenes have these stones witnessed? Why is the human race so obsessed with erecting these monuments of metal and brick - and why do they so carelessly abandon them when they are no longer needed? These are some of the questions I like to address in my photography. I spent many of my formative years in a small town north of Toronto and witnessed many old farms left to rot. It was these old barns and silos that originally piqued my interest in the forgotten and the decayed. In college, photography was major, drawing me in like no other course. It was then that I saw the potential to marry these structures with the camera's ability to document. From there, I became involved with friends and their bands, working with them to produce promotional pictures as well as CD covers. Unfortunately, life and work intruded and time became less available. More recently, (coinciding with my discovery of digital imaging) my career in real estate has freed up some time to once again pursue this fascination, to be able to indulge my creativity again. Now exploring the urban, rather than rural, landscape, I am hoping to bring the documentary power of the camera to Toronto's hidden areas. With ever increasing publication credits and gallery exhibitions to my name, I am hoping to gain a wider audience for my work.

Damon Kowarsky

BIOGRAPHY:
Damon Kowarsky studied printmaking at the Victorian College of the Arts and Glasgow School of Art, and Advanced Figure Drawing with Godwin Bradbeer at RMIT. In 2000 he graduated from VCA with a BFA [Honours] in Printmaking. Since graduating he has made prints and worked as a archaeological, courtroom, and scientific illustrator. In 2002 he received an Ian Potter Cultural Trust Grant to travel to the western deserts of Egypt and assist as an archaeological illustrator for the Dakhleh Oasis Project. In early 2003 he undertook a residency at the Townhouse Gallery, a contemporary arts space in downtown Cairo. On returning to Australia he was awarded a 2004 Australian Print Workshop Collie Print Trust Emerging Victorian Printmakers Scholarship. 'This was a fantastic opportunity to work through the many ideas and drawings I made overseas. I was particularly influenced by the stone and mud-brick architecture of Tunisia and Morocco with its fortifications, baroque details, and light and airy domes.' In late 2005 Kowarsky travelled through Yemen, Djibouti and Ethiopia. The unique and very distinctive architecture of the region, and the colours of mud and stone, found their way into much of the work made during 2006. Most recently he has returned from four months living and working in Mexico, including time at Taller Bambu, Oaxaca. 'It was an astonishing experience, and I was amazed at the richness and variety of the local art and artesania. Mexicans have an obvious love of the visual world and fill their images with pun, humour and invention. Not to mention the glitz, glamour and aesthetic free-for-all of the markets and fiestas.' Kowarsky continues to print on a regular basis at the Australian Print Workshop in Fitzroy. He is currently working towards future shows and travel in the Near East.

Uwe Schein
myartspace id:ewu2350
BIOGRAPHY:
ORDER OF HANDWRITING Dr. Kurt Jauslin, art critic, on the exhibition of the "Schein-Drawings". July 2nd, 2003 in Erlanger Nachrichten. Translation from Nicole Tomasek. It´s not easy for graphic artists, if they don´t switch to illustration, caricature or other applied forms of their profession. Hans Friedrich Uwe Schein doesn´t do anything like this. The graphic artist from Heidenheim studied at the Academy of Arts in Berlin in the Seventies and lives in Nueremberg since 1998. For him pen drawing is the autonomous way of expression. His only one. Schein´s drawings emerge from handwriting, which develop with them simultaneously. The pen that slides over the pages is a generator of signs, it brings out a cosmos of signs, from which the pictorial order is born. In the process it doesn´t matter if the result is objective or abstract. Handwriting is never abstract, because it places characteristic signs, that refer to its inventor. In Schein´s world of signs the emerging of pictorial order is thematical: A moving order. The handwriting fills the empty page with signs while time is passing. The hand moves constantly and creates a chaotic abundance of signs. Accordingly from the rhythm of beginning and repeting, a glimpse of order appears. Schein likes to play with his own name (i.e. meaning illusiveness, shine), which is also the central term of the whole aesthetic. "Chaos in order" is his name for a monumental series of paintings, refering to the original paradox, the creation of order out of disorder. But one doesn´t have to take this metaphysical allusion for real. According to the second law of thermodynamics, which already dates back 150 years, chaos is recidivism and standstill, the collapse of order results from the equilibrium of forces, the loss of energy. Continuation: Fast and slow drawings. Schein rightly relies on the energy his hand and transfers onto the paper. When the hand stops, order doesn´t collapse, but is maintained in its plural meaning in the standstill of the drawing. However, time in fact still plays a crucial role there. There´s no distinction between objective and abstract drawings, but between fast and slow ones. In the fast drawings the sketch uncovers the order contained in the scaffold of the lines. And often these are associations about the objective, which always appears as a transition motive i.e. when a face emerges from the branches. Since the Renaissance this is called anamorphosis. In the slow drawings, order disappears into the more and more morselled handwriting, which finally fills the whole format. From the signs of the handwriting, it develops a glimpse of a spatial order which is present in the difference between close and remote vision. Naturally, both formal principles are constantly merging. The ambition is not the containment of a doctrine, but the crossing of borders, which emerges from the endless motion of the handwriting.

Patricia Van Lubeck
myartspace id:patje
BIOGRAPHY:
In such a short time, Patricia Van Lubeck has quickly become a leading neo-surreal artist. Born in Amsterdam in 1965, Patricia's life has quite recently changed dramatically. She used to be book-keeper until 2000 when she started the 21st century by becoming a fulltime professional artist. She moved to the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand in 2005. Since then her work has taken a new direction. Although her style is often regarded as surreal, her work does not strictly fall in that category. Her paintings are apparently simple in composition but executed amazingly detailed and visually very dynamic. Her paintings have realistic elements, but above all an alienating atmosphere. Her works in recent years show landscapes and weird plant species which she calls her 'psychedelic gardens'. "I consider my work an invitation to explore the ways we experience our environment. My inspiration comes from the ordinary world around me. It's the artist in me that puts things in an unusual perspective. Compare it to a baker looking at a corn field. He sees bread, cookies and pies, I see shapes, patterns and colors. I often zoom in on an everyday object and imagine a landscape. I must have been an insect in a previous life!" Remarkably, Patricia is a self-taught and self-starting artist. She sets a high benchmark for all her works and seeks to achieve a high level of craftsmanship. It takes her up to eight hours just to prepare the surface on some canvases. Then she oils up to 10 layers to achieve rich colors and a smooth finish. "I am always trying to achieve high contrast within an unlimited colour range. I love working with geometric patterns. Before I started painting on canvas, my cars had always been willing victims to this passion. Consequently patterns, natural or artificial, form the foundation of a lot of my images." Due to her time-consuming technique Patricia is only able to create about 10 paintings a year. She loves painting at night in her rural studio setting with no distractions, just the call of the ruru (a New Zealand native owl) to keep her company. Patricia thrives on the repetitiveness of her patterns. She feels the calming aura in concentrating with a small brush in her 'psychedelic garden'. Since 2002, Patricia has exhibited in the Netherlands, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. She was a finalist in the 2006 James Wallace Art Awards. She was runner-up in the 2006 Tivoli Audio PAL Case design contest in the Netherlands. She reached the finals of the 2007 NZ Painting and Printmaking Award and her painting was choosen as the public's favourite. Two of her paintings feature in the 2008 Artfind calendar.
