BIOGRAPHY:
comenius roethlisberger, june 26th 1971 Comenius Roethlisberger „Histories and Abstracts“ Text by Moritz Neumüller, free-lance curator, Vienna and Madrid One could regard Comenius Roethlisberger’s series „Histories an Abstracts“ as a continuation of his artist’s portraits. In a earlier black and white series the young Swiss photographer depicted famous entertainers, rappers, rock groups and artists. Amongst them were Pipilotti Rist, INXS, Ice-T, Ringo Starr, Sinéad O’Connor and Faith No More. Metallica’s rehearsal rooms, Wolfgang Tillman’s darkroom or Björk’s Nursery represent the life and creativity of those people into whose private sphere the photographer has advanced. But there is also other walls in this series. For example the walls alluding to the structures of the art institutions like Tate Gallery, Conference Room, or Saatchi Gallery, Wall behind Damien Hirst’s Bronze Figure. One is justifiably reminded by these pictures of the photos by Candida Höfer of conference rooms, waiting rooms and museums. Perhaps the most interesting, because richest in connotations, of the walls are those from society’s non-places like porn cinemas for example or prison cells. Prima facie, and sometimes even at closer inspection, these subversive pictures cannot be distinguished from the “more harmless“ interior shots like the elephant house of the Basel zoo. The different titles of the photographs result in completely differing emotional landscapes connected with the stories of the respective location und thus revealing themselves to the viewer of the life-sized colour photographs. The picture possible doing justice to the series’ title the best photograph, taken in the Beyeler Foundation in Basel, of the empty wall where usually hang Monet’s water lily paintings. In a legendary article from 1967 about Jackson Pollock, the critic William Rubin consults Monet’s three-part work for comparative purposes and arrives at the conclusion that it shows a paradigm shift in painting. These paintings are not to be read anymore as window to the world but as walls. Whether the photographer is privy to this history of abstraction is of no importance. Maybe his main concern was the relationship between painting and title (the original water lily wall sign sticks still to its original place), the original’s sublimeness or the invisible presence of the work in its accustomed location. However, it is for sure that also the work of the young photographer underwent a paradigm shift which distinguishes his new works as much from the earlier series as from the work series of Candida Höfer and other representatives of the Düsseldorf school.

BIOGRAPHY:
I find myself experiencing a revolution against the perfection of my camera lens. Camera companies, in their quest for optical perfection, make gear that, to me, is just too good! I feel the camera and its lens contributes as much to the image as the light falling on the scene. The interaction of all these parts make the whole, but the camera and lens have become almost 'transparent' to the scene. Not that it's a bad thing. I'm sure there are more photographers out there who would rather get sharp images out of their rigs than blurry ones, but there can be real magic in those wonky accidents from less-than-perfect gear.

If you ever got a good look at me, I mean had enough time to sit with a cup of tea and just take me in, in all my humanity, I think you'd see a person who's greatest ability is his desire to love and who's greatest fault is the jagged nature in which I deliver my said love...and in that way I am incrediably average. The arts I participate in can only be an exstention of this. Cheers.

BIOGRAPHY:
Brian Sherwin joined the myartspace team in September, 2006. Mr. Sherwin is the Senior Contributing Editor of the myartspace blog. Sherwin conducts and writes the overwhelming number of interviews for the myartspace blog. Sherwin has interviewed over 400 emerging and established artists, including: Michael Craig-Martin, James Rosenquist, Sylvia Sleigh, Thornton Willis and William T. Wiley. Sherwin has long been interested in art and psychology. He studied psychology under the instruction of Dr. Elizabeth Rellinger while attending Illinois College-- a private liberal arts college. His keen sense of the human condition was noted by several instructors in the psychology department at IC. Upon graduation Sherwin worked in the mental health industry serving various positions, including Qualified Mental Retardation Professional (QMRP), Qualified Human Service Professional (QHSP), Activity Instructor, and Resident Aide- rank III (RA III). During those years Sherwin had several case-loads and worked with supporting staff to rehabilitate mentally challenged individuals, including former violent offenders, suffering from mental illness. Sherwin has noted that his experiences working with dangerous individuals-- many of whom would not have been dangerous had it not been for years of childhood and systematic abuse-- made an impact on his art. Direct experience working with the mentally challenged and ill helped Sherwin to better understand the psychological theories of Carl Jung-- another point of influence in Sherwin's art. Sherwin's art also involves his experiences of observing broken homes and drug addiction in the community of his childhood. He was raised in a small town located in one of poorest counties in Illinois. Sherwin has described the community as "a place with 1950s charm... but the steaks have been replaced with meth." Sherwin has exhibited in Illinois. He graduated from Illinois College in 2003 with a BA in Art. He often signs his art work 'Balhatain' or 'BAL'. Sherwin is known for his expressive use of brushwork and line. I'm an open book. Ask.

Nathalie Morin Rousseau
myartspace id:POMME
BIOGRAPHY:
BACKGROUND Born in Montreal, primary and secondary school in Brussels, Belgium, college and professional schools in Quebec. Autodidact and with good entrepreneurial skills, Nathalie Morin Rousseau has experimented mixed techniques and used a number of artistic media before concentrating on acrylic. Initially, Nathalie developed an original technique for painting sceneries on wood for ‘’ Studio Pomme et Soleil ’’. Her painted furniture, as well as her paintings on canvas, have been exhibited and sold in Canada, Europe and the USA. After a sabbatical period of artistic research and experimentation, she decided to go back to canvas painting and to create works inspired by her own personal life experiences. ARTISTIC PROCESS ‘’ The human soul is my preferred subject of inspiration ’’ Inspired by the ability and strength of human beings in the face of changing circumstances of their lives, Nathalie’s works are an abstract and vibrant reflexion on the daily miracles of the human being caught in a dominating universe which he fails to understand. Here abstraction and a form of surrealism sometimes meet a touch of impressionism. See how the vivid colors of her paintings transmit movement and how the texture itself reveals forms. Nathalie often uses her brush and spatula in a spiral stroke and she always let her heart and instinct move her hand. Her artistic search touches subjects such as the surpassing of one’s limits, the desire for freedom and the will to express oneself by any mean. Her community involvement offers children new means of communication to express themselves through the artistic media. PROFESSIONNAL ACTIVITIES AND SOCIAL INVOLVEMENT ‘’To communicate my passion for abstraction in art, for colors, for life itself and everything that gives it meaning!’’ Groupe Animaction Ville de Verdun, L’école primaire de l’Ile des Sœurs, Pensionnat des Sacrés-Cœurs de St-Bruno. Matteo Zacchino
myartspace id:zacchino2006
BIOGRAPHY:
Drawing since childhood, Zacchino is a passionate artist with a zest of creativity. The long search for a way to paint with pure pleasure also increased his understanding for the worlds natural desire for expression. He continually creates whimsical, bold, mystic and colorful artwork out of his studios located in the beautiful valley of Phoenix Arizona, in the rainy woods of Mnster Germany and at the beach in Sanremo Italy. Matteo was born and raised in Sanremo located in the enchanting Riviera dei fiori a famous location for the european and international floral business. Influenced by the bright and beautiful colors found in his surroundings the artist painted in his home delivering stunning modern art exploring all sorts of media. At the age of fourteen he attended art classes at the prestigious State Institute of Art school in Florence Tuscany, where various resources and techniques were enhanced and mastered. The artist also lived in Germany for about three years where he apprenticed in a graphic design/photography studio and learned the language. He then moved to Arizona USA where his family now owns and operates four fine dining Italian restaurants. Some of the restaurants feature his artwork on display and hosts most of his art shows and events. Matteo Zacchino is an artist of many resources and technical skills. Multi layered acrylic paint seems to be his favorite media for his often mystic landscape-like sub-worlds. There, his whimsical subjects start taking a life of their own with a precise and detailed pencil work. To better accentuate his creations he patiently applies small detailed shapes and shadows with the help of various fine paintbrushes, adding to the painting whats defined as his personal style. If art is described as anything that makes the viewer feel, then Matteo s work serves to extend the definition. His artwork is always intense, the subjects take a deep thoughtful and balanced position in the space available. His work also plays on familiar subjects like everyday objects, statues, vases, candles, flowers, hidden symbols and nudity.

BIOGRAPHY:
I'm 19, and during the school year I go to the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. I'm interested in abosultely everything, from old folk music and strange textures (especially the layers of paint that form on buildings and then chip away) to abandoned buildings and the way light hits things. My favorite part of being an artist is getting to work with my hands. I find a deep satisfaction in making solid, weighty things.

BIOGRAPHY:
I was bon on July 21, 1989 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I have lived here my entire life, and have always been interested in art. I was the child who drew on the walls, backs of chairs, and everything else. I started to stray from art when I was in middle school, fearing that I could never be successfu as an adult. I ended up in an art class by accident during my freshman year of high school, and instantly fell in love again. It became clear to me that this was all I wanted to do. I picked up a camera on a trip to Hawaii in 2002, and so began my love for photography. I hope to open up my own photography studio after I graduate college, and would be grateful for any commissions for drawings or paintings. Currently, I'm setting up my business to sell prints of my freelance photography. If anyone is interested in purchasing prints of my photography, please contact me by email at: the.artistic.one@hotmail.com

Gordon Fraser
myartspace id:gfraser
BIOGRAPHY:
Gordon Fraser was born in Boston, MA in December 1975. Shortly after, his family moved to Stamford, CT and then later to Princeton, NJ. Early on he wanted to be an architect and studied mechanical drawing and architectural drafting. Gordon went on to attend Kenyon College in Ohio where he studied comparative religion and Asian Languages and Cultures. In 1996 Gordon traveled to India, Nepal, and Tibet, living in the Tibetan exile communities in Dharamsala, Katmandu, and Sikkhim. In India he was introduced to the Tibetan traditions of Thangka and mural painting, visiting many temples and monasteries throughout the region, photographing the historic wall paintings, learning the iconography, documenting the ongoing restoration work, and meeting many artists practicing the traditional Tibetan painting techniques. Eventually Gordon studied Thangka painting with Tibetan artist Tashi Palden. In 2000, Gordon moved to New York City where he engaged in a rigorous study of artistic anatomy with William Weltman and figure drawing with Minerva Durham. He attended the Pratt Institute drawing, painting and printmaking. Gordon is a member of the Art Students League New York and has studied with abstract painter Frank O'Cain, learning many of the 14th and 15th century techniques of egg tempera and egg oil emulsions. He has also studied with Paul Ching-Bor, focusing on contemporary approaches to water-based media. In addition, Gordon has studied Japanese calligraphy with Kaz Tanahashi. Currently, Gordon lives and works in Jersey City, New Jersey. His works are exhibited in galleries in New York and New Jersey. He is part of an emerging group of international artists whose abstract works draw upon the global roots of painting, merging and fusing a diverse range of sources and traditions into an exciting contemporary abstract idiom.

BIOGRAPHY:
Artist Statement My life is all about process. It’s the getting there that interests me. My art is similar in that I like the process of making something from nothing. I’ve spent years landscaping and building a cabin in the woods, as well as doing artwork, and I love taking a bare piece of nothingness and making it something, walk away and don’t look back. I strive for a nice finished product, but it’s the getting there that keeps me going. I’m not interested in pretty. Be real. Painting is paint on a surface. Any materials, for that matter, have their own essential being, and bring that spirit to the work. I look for that material to speak to me, say something to the viewer, and say whatever it wants. My work is mostly figure ground relationships. I’ve been drawn to the figure all my life. I’m interested in the drama of life and living, and the endless possibilities of the interaction or isolation we encounter. I’m not looking to represent surface reality, but rather emotional or spiritual reality. I want to get under the skin and see what’s going on. I like to represent that with whatever materials I’m using.
