Alyona Nickelsen

BIOGRAPHY:
“It is time to start everything over!” said Alyona and she did it. New family, new country, new life, new Alyona... Alyona was born and raised in Ukraine. Since childhood she has drawn for teachers and fellow students, published school newspapers, created posters, displays and entire art shows for various school events. "I guess I have always been an artist at heart. However, my art took a breather while I concentrated on completing my education and dealt with life’s various surprises", she says. Her creative bent awoke again after moving to Southern California in 1999. “Before now, circumstances kept me from taking my art seriously. Now is the right time, thanks to my wonderful husband Tom for his support and patience. Everything that has been and will be created I dedicate to him!” From the beginning Alyona’s favorite medium has been graphite and charcoal. However, colored pencils have now captured her inspiration and creativity. "I began to understand that a medium I had overlooked from childhood could do so much more than just sketch and produce a wondrous array of colors and tones. I discovered new systems and methods that changed my perceptions and molded the results into something more than I had previously thought possible", she says. "A great influence on my work has been the talent of Hans Christian Andersen", Alyona says. "He could weave very innovative stories about the simple events in every day life and make them fascinating to listen to. I use the language of shapes and colors to do the same with my paintings. Capture the simple movement of a leaf caught in a breeze and, though it may happen the same exact way only once in all of nature’s complexity, it is saved for a lifetime when rendered by my pencils." “People always ask me: Are you sure this is colored pencil?” Alyona’s paintings really don’t look like what you would expect from colored pencils. She applies 20 or more layers of color to give the drawing an oil painting effect. "Since colored pencils require long and tedious hours to achieve the exact effect desired it is critical to carefully and meticulously plan the process of creating each piece. Knowledge of the medium’s essences, constant improvement of skills and techniques, searching for new ways to use the medium and being open to experimentation are crucial keys for success. Hard work and passion brings results. I am enjoying my journey and looking forward to new challenges." Alyona's work has been exhibited in many national and international shows, won numerous awards and has been displayed in many private and public collections throughout the United States. Alyona is a member of Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) and International Guild of Realism. Alyona devotes all of her time and energy by creating pieces that reflect her matchless views and sharing her passion with art lovers. Many new projects will be posted soon. So don’t forget to visit our website again. If you have a question to Alyona, inquiry about a particular artwork or comment about her website, you can contact the artist directly at brushandpencil@cox.net. May God bless you all!

Keith Murray
myartspace id:KeithM
BIOGRAPHY:
Even from a very early age, Keith Murray was enthralled by the idea of things bigger and more enduring than himself and his place in the universe. He saw a beautiful, contrasting, authentic drama of life playing with purpose all around him and was compelled to tell that truth in picture form to anyone who would listen. He didn’t have long to wait for his audience. Murray began oil painting at age ten, and by the time he was in his early teens, he was doing portrait commissions. The challenge of capturing that elusive “life quality” of his subject on the canvas became his highest aim and truest test of his skill. Technical ability is very important to me. It’s something I’ll always strive to master,” Murray once remarked. “But even more importantly is that special … something, that soul, that essence, that spark of a subject that can’t be captured by studious execution alone. It has to be seen, felt and held in the heart as the most noble attribute. Only in putting that quality first can an artist hope to be able to channel its energy onto the canvas. And without it, any work, no matter how grand or epic or skillfully done, is dead.” A native of Healdton, OK, Murray graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a degree in Art. He went on to attend graduate school at West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas for one year. But his quest for that “life beyond the image” would not find fruition until 1993 when he began studying with classical realist, Kirk Richards, in Amarillo. For the next six years, Murray faced the daunting task of unlearning much of what he had been taught by the system. It was through this rigorous training that Murray began to find his focus and direction, and not surprisingly, his art began to blossom. Over the years, Murray has exhibited many places and participated in a wide array of shows. While living in Amarillo, Murray won Best of Show in the prestigious Best of the Southwest show with his apocalyptic still life “Day of Reckoning.” He was also chosen, with a handful of other artists, to exhibit during a NATO conference also held in Amarillo. Most recently, he was invited to exhibit his work at the Oklahoma State Capital where he had a one-man show in the Governor’s Gallery. Murray is represented by Illuminaria Fine Art located in Chatham, MA in the lovely Cape Cod area. At a glance, it’s easy to see the strong classical quality of Murray’s work. Though highly traditional, his paintings never fail to translate as fresh and lively. Capturing “the spark”, as he puts it, is key. And when filtered through the complex, mental latticework of symbolism, that inner spark yields paintings with the kind of presence that, despite constantly changing fad and fashion, will undoubtedly stand the test of time.

BIOGRAPHY:
Emma Sheldrake was born and bred into a family of artists. Eccentricity is the cornerstone of the Sheldrake family. She graduated from the Queensland College of Art in 1995. Emma has had ten years experience working within the Design, Advertising, and Fashion industries as an Art Director, Graphic Designer and Stylist. From television commercial conception through to interior design, Emma has worked the full spectrum of creative industries, including working in Brisbane, Sydney and the USA, for amongst others, George Patterson Bates. Perhaps another side of Emma is Dj Hoola her ‘other personality’. This has been another outlet for her endless supply of energy and love of anything where she can be creative and amused. She has played locally and internationally in clubs from the Versace Hotel through to the Lychee Lounge, for events, exhibitions, and fashion launches. She has mixed her love for old jazz and fused this into a blend of house and electronica. This has triggered inspiration into her other creative ventures such as fashion design and fine art. Presently heading up Sheldrake Creative as Creative Director, Emma’s outlet is her fine art. She has had her paintings in exhibitions at the Queensland Art Gallery and The Powerhouse. Her first solo exhibition ‘Confronted’ was a body of work heavily influenced her work in the fashion industry and her love for the Pop Art movement. Emma’s inspired by artists such as Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Brett Whiteley, Esther Erlich, Roy Lichtenstein and Jeffery Smart. In addition she also takes inspiration from fashion photographers such as Ellen Von Unwerth, Sacha Dean Biyan and David Lachapelle. Bold, striking, spontaneous and captivating her works reflect the fact that painting liberates her passion and energy. Large, fluid brushstrokes, paint left to drip at its own accord, coupled by images that stare, question, provoke or seduce the onlooker is her signature style. Her art is a combination of mischievousness/flamboyance mixed with strong painterly surrounds with bold colour combinations. These images of woman define the power they have to seduce the onlooker. The beauty becomes woven into the canvas but the symmetry blurred and features flawed by the paint that drips on its own accord. This is how these images escape the ‘stereotypes’ of the pages of fashion magazines into a ‘free’ graphic representation of character.

Loren D., Jr. Adams
myartspace id:Lorenartist
BIOGRAPHY:
Loren D. Adams, Jr. Sir Rennaissance man, Loren D. Adams,Jr. Sir is now celebrating 40 years as a professional Fine Arts Classic Surrealist Artist/Innovator. Adams was born in Linton, Indiana on September 28th, 1945. He developed a profound interest in painting at the age of nine years old. One of these very early original Art-works found it's way into a major retrospective exhibition at the prestigious R.W. Norton Art Gallery, a Museum of Early American, European and Contemporary Fine Art in Shreveport, Louisiana in February of 1979. His first public exhibit was at the Roseville Museum, Roseville, California in 1967. This was the same year he quit his day job as an emergency room L.P.N. to devote full time to his Art. The young Artist began to chase after his dream to become a Master. Today his beautiful original oil paintings & limited editions are in Museums and important collections world-wide. Not content to rest on his past laurels, he continues to extend the borders of his creative excellence, always searching for a finer expression of his ideals. His love of classical music has often caused him to consider a career as a concert pianist, instead the Art and Music have combined to create a deeper resonance and added a richer colour to both. The relationship between sound and light is an important phenomenon to the Artist because of the fact that the electromagnetic spectrum is also divisible into the two relative human senses of hearing & seeing, which Loren Adams refers to as “the Chromatic Sequence” He illustrates the relationship between sight and sound modulations in musical intervals and the primaries & hues of the artist colour wheel in the following manner: Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do = yellow, orange, red, violet, blue, green, indigo to yellow at the next level with a new octave... with every colour having it’s own music note equivalent & each note having a corresponding colour. The range of human hearing is about 12 octaves & the range of sight which is also a vibration starts at infer-red at the lowest visibility... continuing throughout the spectrum to ultra-violet at the highest frequency. Each Colour matures at a different value in terms of pigments... ultramarine blue being pure in the 1st octave. Yellow is at it's purest at the 9th octave or the 18th value measuring from to black to white which is at the 24th value or the 12th octave. Being conscious of these intervals when he mixes his palette of oil pigments before starting to paint naturally gives more consciousness to using the colours. With this in his mind his paintings are thus composed as though they were symphonic creations as he deftly orchestrates the forms and values with beautiful precision. His interpretation of classical music is very colourful; to say it best he’s playing the light & the colours as well as the written score, which to this artist is another dimension that was indeed intended by the composer. He gets most of his inspiration from classical music and esoteric writing of the Spiritual genre 'without prejudice' and from these lovely ideals he paints his dreams & visions. He calls his Art-form Classic Surrealism and also Nuclear Mysticism. His Paintings are very beautiful and most of them represent portals to: The Journey to the City of God 'Citadel Divina' the Divine City. The most striking thing about all of his artistic creations is always the quality of lighting and the detail in his shadows. His portrayal of 'light dancing on the moving water' has set him in a league all by himself. He loves to paint the ocean and the sea in all of her many moods which he knows to be the most emotional subject. From a quiet crystal calm day to the gigantic storm with a maelstrom Loren Adams can paint it like no-one else can and convince any viewer that they could get wet! He is a serious Artist who believes it takes perfection as a goal to achieve a Masterpiece. 'Each brushstroke is just as important as the whole picture and is the center of my consciousness.' 'Knowing all the while that a single sour or poorly formed note would ruin a symphony... and likewise would also ruin a fine oil painting!' As he says over & over again. In order for any Artwork to be great there are several things that it must be, and it must measure up to the standards that other great Art does measure up to. Loren Adams believes that Fine Art must be intellectually stimulating & the composition must be mathematically perfect. The perspective has to based on accuracy especially if the painting contains Architecture or even Architectural elements. It needs to be historically significant & have a meaning that tells a story important enough to help widen the planetary cultural base. And above all else it must be well painted. Unless an Art-work has value to the Artist it is un-likely that anyone else will value it either. Loren D. Adams is reluctant to part with his originals at all and has kept many of his favourites over the past 25 years. He prefers to sell Limited Editions of these paintings & keep as many as he can for the Loren Adams Museum of Fine Art which now contains several that 'just aren't for sale at any price!' They are all like his children and he needs to feel certain that he would enjoy visiting his children in a collectors home before he's willing to sell them. Just because someone has money and can afford to buy one does not impress this Artist... some people will never have enough money to own his work. Collectors who are fortunate to purchase them know they are adopting not acquiring them. There is an undeniable responsibility that goes along with collecting Fine Art... because he painted them for the whole world, not just for the wealthy. However he doesn't give them away either... so when someone does buy one they pay handsomely in respectful figures because he wants them to go to good homes where he knows they will be well cared for and insured. Seriously speaking... the Artist loves to quote Benjamin Franklin from his Poor Richard's Almanac: 'There will always be someone who can make something cheaper & sell it for less, as a bargain, & anybody who considers price alone is this man's lawful prey... I have no quarrel with anyone who settles for less, they know what their product is worth!' 'Until they're ready to get serious, they are going to call someone who is serious sophisticated, arrogant or belligerent snobs... Their in-ability to make a decision for themselves based in facts with clear logic and knowledge is determined by their 'emotional attachment' to their point of view... which makes it difficult for them to make a rational decision about serious matters at all. And to anyone who is not serious about collecting he quotes Duveen; 'they're not ready to deal with me yet, they'll need to keep making a few more mistakes first!' And finally he wants the world to know that 'when it's real Art, perhaps it's not for everyone!' because it is not about money and it's not about 'real estate' and it is not about anything of Dynastic proportions, it's about Art! The State of California, in The Fine Arts Statute in the Civil Code, Art is declared as the exact opposite of crime because it enhances Culture and also encourages positive changes towards a better Society. In the 'Real Art World' Loren Adams' highly collectable Art-work is known as 'Recognised Quality.' When Rosanne was 8 years old she went to Disney World with her family. On Main Street, there was a little booth where someone was lampworking using the crochet technique. That was it for her! It was magic! She spent hours that first day begging her parents to let her watch. Thankfully, they agreed. Ever since then, she has been fascinated with glass and its movement. This fascination was finally fulfilled when a serious ankle injury put her on crutches for three years and forced her into an early retirement from her career. In 2004 she turned to her childhood love of glass and all things that sparkle, to bring a brightness back into her life she had feared she had lost due to this injury. A visit to an open house at Urban Glass fueled her fire to create in glass. A start up glass kit and some glass books and videos have turned into quite an adventure for her. Her talents range from glassblowing and sculpting, to jewelry design and mural painting. Visit www.suromuralmagic.com to see her painted works. Rosanne creates one of a kind glass sculptures, jewelry, gift items, clocks, and mixed media art. She specializes in aquatic life sculptures, helicopter sculptures, and Rosanimal TM, the last of which combines a twist of tongue with a twist of glass to brighten your day!

Claudia Kleefeld
myartspace id:claudiakleefeld
BIOGRAPHY:
With symbolic imagery, simplicity of form and the use of traditional methods, Claudia Kleefeld paints contemporary figurative oil paintings. "Oil paint and the figure have been a constant source of inspiration for my work. There is nothing more beautiful than a great painting, that which grips the public through centuries of change. In the stillness of the imagery and its simplicity, is all its force. I find in painting, with the presence of the figure and the slowness of the process, the intimacy which I so strive for is achieved. Time becomes a precarious friend, allowing its imagery to unfold."

Heather Morgan
myartspace id:starboy
BIOGRAPHY:
"Every moment is of endless worth, for it represents the whole of eternity."(1) Heather Morgan's figurative oil paintings, primarily of women, dwell in themes of performance of identity and gender as a reflective way to express life's perverse tension between frail and fleeting, and the infinite. "An artist neglects no aspect of his dual nature. This dualism is the power of being oneself and someone else at the same time."(2) Morgan's women are consumed by the viewer, the voyeur's gaze. They often display a self-possession that suggests the knowledge that they are being examined, either from the mirror, seeing themselves as though from the outside, or by the viewer. The possibilities for self-creation are illustrated in a succession of vivid characters loosely based on the artist, her acquaintance, and recognizable cultural constructions; cigar-chomping chicks, androgynes, harlots, fighters, dancing queens, the starved, the tragically hip, the desperate (but not serious). Whether lurid or delicate, these figures are rendered with intelligence and awareness. The originality of these images comes from a sensibility that echoes the step of our time through fashion, expression, and a keen visual wit. These works invite the viewer to look and to covet, presenting an alluring world that is also potent and seething. Beauty quivers with pain and flaw in the distorted, luminous, candy-like figures that populate Morgan’s paintings. Every detail suggests a struggle, every gesture conveys a meaning, loaded with self-questioning. The figures stretch out louche before the viewer and bravely offer themselves with a conflicting, penetrating gaze. These unflinching yet vulnerable pastel heroines become all the more unknowable, as they reveal themselves in their fractured splendor. (1) Johann Wolfgang Goethe (2) Charles Baudelaire

BIOGRAPHY:
“joSon, a photographer with a culturally-rich background divides his time between New York City and San Francisco” - Communication Arts magazine. joSon (jo-shon) was born in the Philippines to a Filipino-Chinese mother and an African-American father. At the age of ten, he was sent to live with his mother’s family in Vietnam, where he was educated in a Buddhist temple throughout most of his teen years in preparation for becoming a monk. “I thought that was my calling long before I saw life through the viewfinder,” joSon continues, “…but the truth is, I have never left the monkhood. I just left the temple. You can see that very clearly in my work today in a landscape, a portrait or a flower – meditations on the beauty to be found in the simplest of forms.” After spending a few summers in the United States, he moved to San Francisco where he received his Master of Fine Arts Degree in Photo-Illustration from the Academy of Art University. His earlier desire for calm and tranquility, his humor and fun loving approach to life are clearly reflected in his images to this day. His collectors recognize his imagery for it’s simple yet elegant treatment of the natural world. “joSon’s work helps me fall in love with my garden all over again” - says one collector when describing his collection of botanical images. joSon explains: “I do not like to simply document my subject, but rather bring it to life in my photography… and Mother Nature has the best subjects to inspire my passion.” joSon’s black and white travel images of exotic landscapes reveals the timelessness of the land that we have long forgotten. Describing his recent photo exploration of Asia, joSon observes: “as Asia becomes more modern, skyscrapers and shopping malls are the landmarks of the future. As I travel, I try to search for its past and hope to document the people, the lands and the culture that still hold its secrets.” joSon's work has appeared in ads for clients like, Yahoo DSL and Claritin pharmaceuticals, Samsung Electronics, Emirates Airline, Viking River Cruises in prominent magazines like Four Season, Communication Arts, IEEE, National Geographic Adventure, Parade, San Francisco and Vogue. joSon images have appeared in books and book covers, calendars, and greeting cards. His work has been exhibited in fine art galleries worldwide and has won numerous awards, including Graphis and PDN magazine. joSon also has collaborated with corporate clients such as Target Stores to create art work for their “Home Collections.” Today joSon’s limited edition prints are represented executively by Grand Images and their partners. Outside of airport waiting rooms, joSon finds himself most at home between New York City and San Francisco.
