What is the guiding principle of the physiology of perception? In the arena of metaphysical research it has been postulated that perception is contingent upon the awareness of our surroundings through the medium of our senses. Until recently researchers have presumed that perception is causal. Contemporary metaphysical research asserts however, that this may not be the case and propose that it may possibly be the reverse. It has been suggested that awareness emanates from within. That is to say, we as individuals forge our own reality, within which we reside and in turn react to.
I find this question concerning perception intriguing because I deal with the “visual” daily, particularly as it pertains to my art making. If a viewer is not necessarily responding to the stimuli I set forth, what exactly is transpiring? One question leads to another.
In an effort to interpret and respond to these questions, my sculpture aims to embody transcendental realities and the possibilities that lie within. In this process it alludes to the concept that our physical experiences are wholly introversive. I stipulate that authentication of a tangible existence requires personal examination followed by validation. My intent is to encourage the viewer to examine and reassess the relationship between the surroundings we conceive, and consequently dwell in.
