  1. Has a specific work of art touched your soul? Can you recall a specific work of art that helped your through a difficult time or defined a time of joy for you? I know that some people suggest that there is no longer room for the spiritual in the art of today-- do you agree? Or would you say that the spiritual aspects of art surround us just as they did in other periods of time? In your opinion, why does visual art have this power-- why do viewers establish these personal connections?

Perhaps I've been spending too much time isolated in my painting room, but who exactly suggests that there is no room for the spiritual in today’s art? I see religious and spiritual-themed art pretty frequently and I consider my own work to have spiritual aspects to it.
A particular work from another artist that has touched me is a painting by Dean Mitchell titled "Psalm 4:1" you can find an image of the painting at the following link: http://www.greenwichworkshop.com/thumbnails/default.asp?a=45&detailtype=artist. The girl's posture of absolute supplication to her creator just always stirs me. The vulnerability of the back of her neck and the loose crossing of her fingers signal a depth of trust and relaxation in the knowledge that her god "has her" that is very touching.

Another painting that is not so much spiritual but poignant, is Howard Terpening’s "Digging In At Sappa Creek". The desperation in the faces and actions of the Cheyenne is wrenching and the setting sun acts like a symbolic indicator of the closing of the chapter on their culture and way of life as it once was:
