Karen's Family
Karen's Family
A collaboration of poetry and painting based upon Karen's poems about her family
Karen Lewis, my daughter, wrote poems about her immediate family and asked me to create paintings interpretting each poem. This was very challenging, being my own family, plus trying to paint a painting for the poem she wrote about me.

Papi
PAPI By: Karen Lewis A struggle to lift himself out of the state life put him in The hope that one day he might transfer his dreams his strength and his willpower, to the children he has worked so hard to protect?. to shelter. That he may give them what they need to take hold of life and to surpass all expectations. Through his eyes one comes to find that success is not only attainable, but surpassable. That with enough effort anything is possible. A child looking back upon the story of such a life is filled with awe and inspiration. Looking at where he began and what he?s become a child?s heart is filled with pride and love. A sense of honor at being allowed to call someone so special ?PapI?

Kristina
KRISTINA By: Karen Lewis In a crowd: head held high shoulders squared an air of confidence. at ease with the fact that she can handle whatever life might throw her way. To a younger sister: not only someone to look up to, but someone to confide in. Someone to watch from afar someone to learn from, someone to admire. With her years of experience she makes my life easier. Departing with knowledge and advice she helps to ensure that mistakes are avoided, and history does not repeat itself. Dispensing of her truths she is wise, yet approachable. She is all anyone could ask for in a friend, a companion, and most importantly in an older sister.

Michelle
MICHELLE By: Karen Lewis In every ounce of her soul, every ounce of her being, there lives an incredible love for life. The energy one finds in her is contagious, quickly filling any room upon her entrance. Her smile, brightens a dull day. Her laugh, reminds you of all the good life has to offer. She lives every moment to its full capacity. No second wasted. No time lost. To try new things, to meet new people, to open your eyes and mind to the unknown, the exciting: this is living life to its fullest. In her presence you will not find a dull or forgotten moment, no moment is quickly swept away without a thought, without a glance. Her incredible energy cannot be captured, cannot be contained. All one can do is watch, and for a moment: catch a glimpse of what it really means to live life to the fullest.

Sean
SÉAN By: Karen Lewis The warmth of a smile, the glow of a laugh, the sweet tingling of a fond memory. Add all this together and still, you are nowhere near finding a heart of gold. A heart of gold is worth more than all the money in the world. It is so rare, that one could spend years climbing the highest peaks and searching the deepest seas without ever coming close to experiencing this rare and precious gift. While many may spend their lives searching and never finding, I?ve been blessed to find within you a heart so good and pure, a heart so full of love, a heart that must be made of gold.

Diana
DIANA By: Karen Lewis At first glance a sweet, quiet, shy girl. But just try and clamp your iron hand around her will of steel and that sweet, quiet, shy girl will be no more. Impose on her the law of your word, and no longer will your words have meaning. Set in stone your do?s and don?ts and that stone will soon be broken. No chains shall bind this young girls hands and no walls enclose her mind. She could conquer the world if she so desired, for there is nothing this girl can?t do. A sweet, quiet, shy girl she will remain, if allowed to follow her own path, make her own rules, live her own life. Her will is hers, her mind is hers, and her life?. well make no mistake of it, that is definitely hers too.

Mami
MAMI By: Karen Lewis She leads a double life hers?. and yours. Your joy?. her joy. Your fear?. her fear. Your pain?. her pain. In her eyes only understanding, in her heart unmatched love. She is the mother who sits awake all night anxiously awaiting your arrival. After all these years, you are and always will be her little child. Growing up you found comfort in her arms. Tears were quickly dried and bruises kissed away. Each new day a new experience, a new discovery, to be shared with Mami. She held your hand, in comfort and support as you embarked on that first, fearful day of school. And as you walked down that long isle to receive your diploma you searched the crowd until you saw her tearful eyes. Her heart is filled with pride and joy at all of your accomplishments, be them great or small. For when it comes to you, all accomplishments are to be celebrated. She cheers you on through the good through the bad. At each step on the journey of your life she is there, in spirit and mind if not in body. And all this time, as she showers her love and support on you she expects so little back. If only she could see into our hearts and gaze upon the tremendous love we feel for her. If only she could comprehend the immense difference she has made in our lives. If only there was a way on this earth to truly tell her ?thank you?.
