Sculptural Installation |
| Quick Description: multi and mixed media objects and installation |
| Detailed Description: Sometimes what we see is not always what we get; knowledge of the world is limited, or at least dictated, by appearances. My sculptures, installations, photographs, and drawings explore notions of memory, myth, and gestalt as a function of architectural relationships, geography, the natural world, and place dynamics. I am interested in positioning the world in a way that relocates the viewer and persuades them to question their opinion of what things are and how things work. This is achieved by recreating familiar images and instances that employ scale shifts, the collision of metaphors, and the posing of interior versus exterior.
Nature is a significant feature of my identity. I grew up in Canada, moving every four years on average. While forcing me to develop creative ways to entertain myself, living in a number of remote areas required me to extend a close relationship with the natural world and my environment. I used to pretend I was Jacques Cartier, exploring my new surroundings on my trusty two-wheeled vessel, building forts and claiming territory in the name of the King. Every move presented another opportunity to take my place amongst history?s great explorers. Moving from Eastern to Western Canada and having to learn English at the age of four was a challenge, but relocating to Washington State at age twelve deepened my sense of displacement.
Though I am a maker, I encourage conceptual diversity and flexibility in lieu of dedication to one medium or method. This allows me to employ a wide range of subject related media from wood, plastic, and cardboard, to light, sound, and video, as a function of their inherent ability to communicate. This methodology also enables me to flow between genres, avoiding labels like ?Sculptor,? or ?Media Artist.? Rather, I see myself as one who analyzes the contemporary landscape in search of ways to deconstruct it both visually and temporally.
