Self-Resolving Problems

Quick Description: Current body of work. Mechanisms that exist only to hold themselves up.
Detailed Description: These sculptures are invented only to sustain themselves, functioning as self-resolving problems. The result is an object that has been invented only to compensate for the complications created by its own existence. The piece alone represents the need and the resolution. Many of these pieces are small, spring loaded, mechanical objects. They are intricately designed and fabricated to accomplish one of the most simple, yet most essential tasks that an autonomous object can. This task, this need, is that of holding itself up. In most cases, these pieces accomplish this by actively attaching themselves to specific architectural features and individual objects.

Self Installing Mechanism
Piece slowly climbs wall until it reaches a height at which it unplugs itself.
Dimensions: 36 x 25 x 12 inches.; Medium: Mixed

Untitled (fishbowl) Mechanism
Mechanism in bowl on top of mechanical base, connected with bicycle brake lines. Weight of mechanism and bowl sitting on base holds mechanism inside bowl in expanded position. Mechanism wedged inside of bowl keeps bowl from dropping any further on base.
Dimensions: 15 x 15 x 15 inches; Medium: Mixed

Corner Mechanism #3
Piece consists of a base and an upper mechanism connected by 6 sets of cables. Upper mechanism is installed in a corner at a height at which cables are taught, causing mechanism to compress springs and wedge itself in corner.
Dimensions: 60 x 20 x 8 inches; Medium: Mixed

Bottle Mechanism #1
Piece consists of two parts joined together with bicycle brake cable: the mechanical base, and the mechanism that fits inside of the bottle. When the bottle with the mechanism is atop the mechanical base, the combined weight maintains enough tension to keep the mechanism inside the bottle expanded, bracing itself in the center of the bottle.
Dimensions: 14 x 14 x 14 inches; Medium: Mixed

Bottle Mechanism #2
Weight of bottle with mechanism inside keeps mechanism inside bottle wedged open, which in turn, keeps bottle from dropping an lower.
Dimensions: 42 x 20 x 20; Medium: Mixed

Untitled set of Mechanisms (Detail)
Spring loaded mechanisms cling on to corner.
Dimensions: 4 x 5 x 6 inches each. set of 10; Medium: Mixed

Glass Mechanism #1
Piece is installed on glass "fin". Rock disc counterwieghts on both side cause mechanism to pinch rubber pads together on glass.
Dimensions: 30 x 36 x 12; Medium: Mixed

Untitled (Cavity) Mechanism #1 w/Glass Dome
Piece is a spring loaded mechanism that wedges itself into inside of a cavity (the glass dome in this case), suspending itself.
Dimensions: 10 x 7 x 7 inches; Medium: Mixed

Drywall Mechanism #2
Piece is installed on drywall wall. It has centrally located springs that use bicycle brake lines to carry tension of springs to the outer mechanisms. Outer mechanisms have points that when tensioned simultaneously gently dig into wall surface.
Dimensions: 15 x 11 x 11 inches; Medium: mixed

Drywall Mechanism #3
Piece is installed on drywall wall. It has a counterweight that presses points at opposing angles gently into the wall. If counterweight is lifted, springs retract points and piece falls off wall.
Dimensions: 11 x 6 x 7 inches; Medium: mixed

Concrete Mechanism #2
Piece is installed on a concrete wall. It has fine hook like points that hook into small pores inherent in cast concrete walls and pulls hooks in opposition.
Dimensions: 20 x 4 x 10 inches; Medium: mixed

Parallel Walls Mechanism #1
Spring loaded mechanism wedges itself between two parallel walls, suspending itself.
Dimensions: 96 x 204 x 24 inches; Medium: mixed

Untitled (Cavity) Mechanism #2 w/ Glass Dome
Piece is a counterweight driven mechanism that wedges itself into inside of a cavity (the glass dome in this case), suspending itself.
Dimensions: 6 x 3.5 x 3.5 inches; Medium: mixed

Concrete Mechanism #4
Spring loaded centerpiece tensions ~150' of cable that runs continuously through 9 satelite hooking mechanisms to hold whole piece up. Hooking mechanism delicately grasp edges, holes, pores, and other attributes of a concrete wall.
Dimensions: variable install approx. 96 x 144 x 7 in; Medium: mixed
