[ - Artist Statement for Large Format Oil Paintings - ]
Objective OR Non-objective. The Great Debate. By combining a truly representational media, that of photography, with an analytical dissection and a non-objective approach in technique of mixed media oil painting, the unification of objective art and non-objective art can be achieved.
I seek to create a unique visual dialogue by observing nature at its most intimate level. The process begins with an objective (realist) approach by shooting a macro photograph of objects to reveal a microcosm of aesthetically powerful "parts".
The photograph at this level has already distorted the object beyond recognition.
I amplify this distortion; building a non-objective painting using only the most basic elements of general composition; shape, surface and color. Within each painting there are complimentary combinations and "movements" (borrowing a musical vernacular) of chaos and order.
