Art News by Art News Journal

What becomes of us and our art? A very interesting open debate between two myartspace members has moved to the public between John Gargano (profile) and Sten Are Sandbeck (profile). The debate is covered in depth on the myartspace blog. The debate centers around the real definition of art and whether we as a culture have gone wrong in our definition of art in the last 30-40 years. Good reading and certainly feel free to weigh in your opinion.

Non-Profit Arts Economy Grows 50 Percent: "Americans for the Arts' national survey released last month found nonprofit arts yields more than $166.2 billion in annual economic activity throughout the U.S., which represents a 50 percent increase over five years. The study also found that the nonprofit arts industry creates the equivalent of 5.7 million full-time jobs." Backsteag 06/06/07

Who Believes Studies For The Arts? Knute Berger writes that the proliferation of studies purporting to show the economic impact of the arts are inflated. "One of the most study-happy 'industries' is the arts. Local arts groups put out economic impact studies every couple of years. One problem in comparing them is that their focus or methodologies seem to change slightly, so it's difficult to get apples-to-apples comparisons. But the drumbeat is very familiar. It re-enforces a pre-determined mission (the arts matter!), touts the intangibles (quality of life!), takes credit for non-arts related economic activity (what would you do without us?), and elevates the arts to the status aerospace (we're an industry!). Greek Police Raid, Close Art ShowGreek artists and media are protesting government raid and shutdown of an art exhibit. "Featuring work by more than 70 artists and organized under the auspices of the Greek Cultural Ministry, the 13th edition of the Art Athina exhibit included an installation by artist Eva Stefani in which viewers could peer through a peephole and see footage of Greek pornography from the 1960s and 1970s, set to a soundtrack that includes the Greek national anthem."
