Australian National Gallery Van Gogh Declared Fake "National Gallery of Victoria says tests reveal a key work is not by legendary impressionist Vincent Van Gogh, as thought for more than 60 years. The gallery today announced the results of authentication tests of the work Head of a Man, which British art experts have called a fake." The Age (Melbourne) 08/03/07 Big Artists Get Into The Gallery Biz Several big name artists are setting up their own galleries in London. "Damien Hirst has reportedly bought a series of railway arches in Vauxhall in which he wishes to open a gallery and restaurant, rumoured to be opening next year. Jake Chapman is also said to be negotiating a lease for his own permanent gallery site. Already up and running is Wolfgang Tillmans, who opened the exhibition space Between Bridges in east London last year." The Guardian (UK) 08/02/07 Does Corporate Sponsorship = Artistic Compromise? "Over recent years, Shell has sponsored the National's innovative Connections programme, producing theatre for young people by leading playwrights. It was a project that, as Nicholas Hytner said, had everything: 'exciting new plays, committed and inspired performers and an audience that wants to be challenged, provoked and entertained'. But it took the support of a multinational oil company to make it possible. Not everyone is comfortable with this sort of creative relationship." The Guardian (UK) 07/31/07 Germany Wants Art Back "German cultural institutions have issued a catalogue detailing thousands of objects of art that disappeared from Berlin at the end of the second world war, in the hope of pricking the conscience of governments to return them." The Guardian (UK) 08/02/07
