Brian Sherwin, our senior blog editor has been continuing his interview series with artists. Below are a couple of recent highlights:

Michael Craig-Martin

". . . Michael has a long and impressive list of accomplishments in the world of art: He has served as a Trustee at the Tate Gallery, has done installations for the Projects exhibition series at The Museum of Modern Art, New York (1991) and the Centre Pompidou in Paris (1994), and has created major wallpainting installations at the Kunstverein Hannover (1998) and at the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart (1999). Michael represented Great Britain at the XXIV Bienal de São Paulo (Brazil) in 1998 due to his dedication and contributions to the artworld. . ."

Sarah Maple

"People often think that Sarah Maple is trying to be offensive with her Islamic based art. This is a huge misconception as she is Muslim herself and would not want to offend her own faith. With her work she reveals the confusion that many young Muslims face within the context of contemporary western society. This study offers the viewer 'food for thought' and is influenced by the quest to discover and question 'Identity'. . . "

Art News by Art News Journal

British Artists Find Their Muse In Kate Moss "Kate Moss, who is nothing more than a commercial model, is turning into one of the great subjects of modern British art, what Lizzie Siddall was to the pre-Raphaelites. She has been depicted by Lucian Freud, Alex Katz, Gary Hume, Julian Opie, Stella Vine, Juergen Teller and many others.... And now she has been put into the park at Chatsworth, three metres high and in painted bronze, in an extraordinary sculpture by Marc Quinn." The Independent (UK) 08/17/07

An Art Hedge Fund? Who Wants Safety In Art? "The news that investors are seeking to speculate on the art market following the creation of a new art hedge fund, betting on an art movement or an individual artist's rise in value without actually buying a painting, certainly appears to be an ominous idea. What exactly would it be they are planning to speculate on?" The Guardian (UK) 08/15/07

Is It All Right For True Art To Crack A Smile? "(I)s there a place for humour in art? ... Is it even morally justifiable, in the current climate, to be anything less than furious? We are trained, both as viewers and as consumers, to accept only the grave and magisterial as great. And while Romantic sturm und drang has fallen from favour ... the respect accorded the playful, the determinedly slight, has dropped even further." The Guardian (UK) 08/14/07

MLK Statue Draws Ire For Sculptor's Nationality Chinese artist Lei Yixin is sculpting a statue of Martin Luther King Jr. that's bound for Washington, D.C. "For China's artists, the selection of Lei as the lead sculptor for the project, to be unveiled in 2009 on the Mall, is a triumphant moment." But some Americans object. "By awarding the contract to a Chinese artist, the foundation financing the project has touched on sensitivities at the core of U.S.-Sino relations: nationalism, racism and worries about what China's emergence as an economic and cultural world power means for America." Washington Post 08/15/07

Case Of The Disputed Pollocks Is a trove of paintings really by Jackson Pollock? "The biggest mystery of all is this: if Pollock didn't paint them, who did? And how did they wind up in that dusty storage bin? As with a maybe-Rembrandt or so-so van Gogh, the answer could take years. If we ever get one." Newsweek 08/20/07
