Below are a few artists we'd like to call your attention to this week.

Fiona Jappy

Paintings
In Fiona's words "Research for my work has developed from travel and the experience of living in different places, both nationally and internationally. The transition from one location to another has led me to explore the physical and psychological development of memory and the concept of place. A major component in my investigations is how lived experience is central to the subject of place. As Lucy Lippard states in her book, The Lure of the Local, the definition of a place cannot be judged solely on the beauty of its location. It is space that defines a landscape, but it is space combined with memory that defines a place."

Tadashi Terada

January 2008
Tadashi hails from Japan. In his words "I am not a professional artist. My present work is on Environmental Impact Assessment. I investigate nature of the four seasons. My mind changes when I lived in the deep in the forest alone all by myself in long time. Surrounded by the forest, I feel myself getting purer and purer. Probably I think that my art was created by something powerful that I got from the place. In this process, I feel a like bulb lit up inside me every time.

Brian Sherwin, our senior blog editor has been continuing his interview series with artists. Below are a couple of recent highlights.

Susan Maddux

"Susan Maddux was born in Honolulu and now lives in Brooklyn. Susan is interested in the interaction between technology and nature. In her work she explores the relationships between man, man-made artifacts and the natural world. Her work is primarily focused on the Hawaiian Islands. Susan's art addresses questions such as: What is native? What is natural? What is beauty?..."

Amanda Potter

In Amanda's own words"My favorite thing in the world to do is to learn. So I really loved school. My undergraduate education was really influential. I dabbled in a variety of media and really found my strongest interests in painting and printmaking. I was also very interested in classes outside of the art department. I took classes like Survey of Fossilized Primates, Survey of Living Primates, Archeology, Human Evolution, and Conservation. I have a strong interest in the sciences and in the environment, so I have always felt it important to incorporate these into my artwork..."

John Luce Lockett

"John Luce Lockett studied at The Northampton School of Art and The Byam Shaw Kensington (UK), following this with extensive study in life drawing and human anatomy. Although he has worked in a variety of media, including watercolour, etching and sculpture, he has always considered himself to be an oil painter. John's primary interest is painting people in situations, whether it be a beautiful woman or old men in a bar, and although John does take the occasional commission (and once exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters), he prefers to choose his own models ,locations and compositions and weave his own narrative both real and imagined around the characters in his pictures..."

Who Owns Art? Really? "When will The Art Newspaper and the rest of the media and political world get it into their heads that no one owns Matisse and Picasso, or for that matter Botticelli or Caravaggio, any more than they own Shakespeare, Chekhov, Beethoven or Shostakovich? Issues of copyright regarding writers and musicians do at least have statutes of limitation placed upon them; it is more than high time that similar limitations were placed on art and material culture." The Art Newspaper 03/06/08
