Below are a few artists we'd like to call your attention to this week.

Christy Georg

Nautical Body
Christy Georg has been called “a sculptor of wit and ingenuity, clearly in the tradition of Jean Tinguely and Bruce Nauman” by Rob Fisher. She has exhibited widely, and been granted residencies from Vermont Studio Center, Boston’s Berwick Research Institute, the Roswell AIR program, the MacDowell Colony, the Fine Arts Work Center, SculptureSpace, Pouch Cove, and the Centre des Arts Ross Creek.

Drew Tal

Drew Tal Gallery
In Drew's woords "my art is a personal investigation across cultural bounds into the underlying human themes and common spiritual threads found in religious, mythological and sexual expression. Growing up in Israel in the '60's, was a blessing for me. At that time in history the young state was a true melting pot for millions of immigrants from all around the globe. Surrounded with such a colorful collage of ethnicities, languages, nationalities, cultures and religions made me realize from an early age that the world beyond me was a rich and complex place. This revelation opened my eyes to the exotic, and made me extremely curious about people and their religions, customs, costumes and histories. It also planted an insatiable desire in me to travel to faraway lands.

Beatriz Vaca

Paintings
Beatriz hails from Sevilla, Spain. In 2008 Beatrix earned a degress from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (procedente de la Universidad de Santa Isabel de Hungría de Sevilla). Beatriz has an extensive history of group and solo exhibits in Spain.

Gilbert Boro

Sculture Grounds
Gilbert Boro is a sculptor, architect, educator and international design consultant. He was born in New York City and has been involved in the arts since his boyhood. He has had a distinguished career, spanning more than forty years. He has received two traveling fellowships and had numerous visiting teaching positions, and has invested much of his time in nonprofit arts groups. Mr. Boro's work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and purchased by individuals, corporations and foundations in Carmel, San Diego, La Jolla CA; Denver and Peakview CO; Lyme and Old Lyme, CT; Brockton, Brookline and Boston, Newton, South Dartmouth, MA; Monte-Carlo, Monaco; Lebanon, NH; Brooklyn and New York, NY; and Rutland, VT.

Linda Hasking

Ideal Home & Time & Motion
With previous experience studying Physics and working in industry, it is unsurprising that Linda approaches art as a problem solving exercise; enjoying the technical challenges of printmaking as much as the aesthetics. Having also worked freelance in interior design and decoration for ten years, she is acutely aware of how far people’s vision for their homes differs from their realities and enjoys that debate. No wonder, then, that the outcome of Linda’s BA, Fine Art Printmaking (1st class), at Winchester should be a body of work based on that dichotomy and a practice that continues to explore it, both in her own studio, in the community, and to commission.

Carly Walker

Works March 08
From the United Kingdom, in Carly's words "My art describes my life, experiences I've had, and things that make me who I am today. I endeavour to make work that everyone can relate to. I want people to see a part of who they are in the pieces I do." Having completed her A levels in graphic design and Fine art at Weymouth College, she is currently studying BA Fine Art in Southampton.

Premium Spotlight

Daniel John Gadd

New and Reworked
Daniel holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts. In his own words "I use painting as a way of discovering and learning about myself in order to foster personal growth and maturity. I acknowledge the futility of language in expressing the very deepest emotions of the human experience, and the role art has in filling in the spaces."

Brian Sherwin, our senior blog editor has been continuing his interview series with artists. Below are a couple of recent highlights.

Vito Acconci

"Vito Acconci has developed a diverse body of work through the decades and has been tagged with just as many labels by art critics-- 'Pioneer of Performance', 'Godfather of Transgression', and 'Master of Conceptualism'... just to name a few. Vito has explored poetry, performance, film and video, sound, sculpture, photography, and architecture..."

Connie Noyes

"Connie Noyes is an award winning painter whose work has been exhibited in galleries in Atlanta, Chicago, Washington, DC, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and abroad in London, Florence, and Malaysia. In the 4th Annual Florence Biennale in 2003, she took a 5th place prize in painting from a field of 500 painters. She has been selected for prestigious residencies, including the Emaar International Art Symposium in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (2005), the Thupelo International Workshop in Cape Town, South Africa (2005) and the 6th Annual International Symposium of Art in Bulgaria (2006). Connie's work is in a number of public and private collections including that of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she earned her MFA..."

Janet Fish

"Janet Fish is a contemporary realist painter and printmaker. Janet is best known for her still life paintings that reflect aspects of her daily life. These paintings often contain still life objects from her collections of glassware and other objects-- objects that serve as a starting point for her painting. Her richly colored paintings and prints can be found in public and private art collections throughout the world. She has exhibited at several important venues-- including, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY), as well as the Art Institute of Chicago..."

The Sad Sad Shape Of Writing About Art Today "From the late 19th century to just after World War II, writing about modern art was clear. It had to be. Today, when curators and critics can count on a large audience willing to embrace new art simply because it is new, they don't have to try as hard." The result? Sludgy writing that is a pleasure for no one and is purposely obscure. Wall Street Journal 04/18/08

Why High Art Didn't Make It On The Vegas Strip When the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum and the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art opened on the Strip, both set out to feed art to the masses. Neither was enough to justify a stop in Las Vegas for the savvy cultural tourist. But that was never the plan. The plan was to insert art where art hadn't been, make a lot of money doing so and add cachet to the resorts." Las Vegas Sun 04/13/08
