Below are a few artists we'd like to call your attention to this week.
   

Serge J-F. Levy

In residence and Incog
Serge is a self-taught artist. He began his professional career as a magazine photographer during which time his work appeared in many magazines, including The New York Times Magazine, The London Sunday Times Magazine, and Harpers. Serge is a member of the faculty at the International Center of Photography in Manhattan and also guest lectures and teaches at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. He is represented by Gallery 339 in Philadelphia which in 2007 mounted a solo-exhibition of his street photography titled “In Private”.
   

Bruce McKaig

Time Markers
Bruce McKaig has been making photographs for over thirty years, living and traveling in Europe, North and South America, Siberia, and India. His photography involves meticulous processes that produce one-of-a-kind pieces, working with chance elements of surprise and exploring techniques as diverse as pinhole photography, ambient light images, stereo photography, handcolored images and digital animations. He has a Bachelor of Art from Austin College and a Master of Science in Foreign Service, with Distinction, from Georgetown University. His photographs are in museum collections in the USA, France, and Guatemala.
   

Aleksandar Zaar

Security
Aleksandar was originally from Novi Sad (Serbia) and subsequently raised in Germany and the UK. He holds a BA from Thames Valley University in the UK. Aleks current lives and works France.
   

Joan Priego

Joan Priego
Joan holds a degree in Sculpture from the Escola d'Arts i oficicis de la Diputacio de Barcelona and working on a Doctorage in aesthetics. In the artist's own words "I´m sculptor and philosopher. I´m intersted in human body, body deconstruction and identitiy"
   

"Lacho" Martinez

La Fila
Lazaro E. Martinez "Lacho" was born in October 13, 1972 in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. The creation as seen through the lens of art grabbed Lacho's interest since an early age. He studied and work in the most diverse creative areas available to him at that time, always maintaining the originality that still today is his most outstanding quality. As an adult Lacho enrolled in the "Academia de Bellas Artes San Alejandro", from where he graduated with honors.
   

Hal Myers

Wet Dreams
In Hal's own words "My method is to immerse myself in the environment of a specific culture… becoming (at times daringly) a part of the situation itself. This enables a level of insight not available through typical observation. In other words, I shoot from the inside out, as seen through the local aperture. This adds a large degree of authenticity, introducing a vital layer of texture to an otherwise fine art perspective." Hal attended Middlebury College and the University of Oregon.
Brian Sherwin, our senior blog editor has been continuing his interview series with artists. Below are a couple of recent highlights.

Laura Pannack

Laura Pannack was selected as the winner of the Next Perspective Photography Competition. Laura has been investigating the world of adolescence and it's complexities with her photography. She has worked with young offenders, pupil referral units, schools (including a special needs school) and many young couples. Exploring issues of identity, conformity, love, perception and confusion she strives to represent her subjects without judging them. Her aim is to raise issues of how we perceive young people and how little we understand about their identity and their world...

Matthew Arnold

Matthew Arnold was a runner-up in the Next Perspective Competition. Matthew graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts in 1996 with a focus of photography, design and offset lithography. He has been working for the past eight years as an Art Director and Photographer for various well-known companies in Boston, New York City, and New Jersey. He has recently begun a new series of landscapes and refined his career to focus on his art and photography...."

Graham Nicholls

Graham Nicholls is a London based video, installation and new media artist. He is known for his immersive psychological installations and videos. Graham was one of the first artists to explore the possibility of using the Internet for live video streaming and more recently at the forefront of artistic experiments with virtual reality. He is also known for his use of psychology and Neuro-linguistic programming in his interactive works, adding a new level to how installation art is experienced. His video art is a balance of concept and technique, drawing upon filmic photographic and an architectural awareness of space...

More Records Fall At Spring Auctions -- "The monumental Thomas Moran landscape "Green River of Wyoming," estimated at $3.5 million to $5 million, sold on Wednesday for $17.73 million at a Christie's sale of American art in New York. The price set a record for a 19th-century American painting." A record was also set for American Modernist paintings when a Marsden Hartley canvas went for more than $6m. Thieves Target Art For Scrap Metal -- As prices go up for metals, thieves are stealing public sculptures. "Outdoor sculpture makes an inviting target because it offers large amounts of metal in a freestanding object. It's sitting there. You don't have to break into a gallery." Philadelphia Inquirer 05/21/08


The Man Who Bought The Bacon And Freud -- "Neither Sotheby's nor Christie's disclose information on buyers but sources close to the market confirm that Roman Abramovich, whose fortune is estimated at £11.7bn by The Sunday Times's Rich List, purchased both lots, apparently for display in his London home. He has not previously been known to purchase works of art at this level." The Art Newspaper 05/17/08
