Below are a few artists we'd like to call your attention to this week.

David Maxim

Maxim's
David was born in Los Angeles. Traveled extensively. One in South and Central America. Lived Santa Barbara in the 1970s. He has called San Francisco my home over 30 years. In his words "My work has taken various directions, but a deep sense of the Romantic seems the essential unifying factor in all of it. My abstract work tends to be process oriented--simple machines which play a part in the making of the "picture" are left with the work, driving extra-pictorial content. The figure sculptures grew from the constructed paintings, and deal with various aspects the human condition, and man's foibles. Drawings are often done concurrently with the painting or sculpture I am working on, or they can be preludes to more developed studio works which occur months or even years later. Much of my work has developed from the theatre, using either side of the proscenium as metaphor. Power confined is also basic to an understanding of my art."

Dina Yakerson

Pencil/Ink
In Dina's words "I was born in St.Petersburg and raised in Israel. Currently I am living in Barcelona, Spain, barceloni studied fine arts in an art college in israel, but 2 years into the BFA program, decided to move to barcelona for a one year art course with a provided studio. im interested in the fine lines between grotesque and seductive beauty. perverted distorted figures in ironic situations."

R. Korzep

Cold & Strung Out
Born in St Louis, Missouri, Ms Korpez comments "I like beauty. It's neat. I've been creating random nonsense since I was 2. I want to travel. Taking photographs is my ultimate love."

Roger "Rishab" Tibon

Audry Worster

Complete Work
Audry holds a BFA and MFA. In her own words "It is easy to realize, all at once, that huge amounts of time have passed by, un notice, un accounted for. nothing to remember it by. The actuallity of placing, measuring, guessing, drawing, slicing, painting, etc. is an organizational strategy to connect oneself to passing time. The hand made images are remnants of the day."

Brian Sherwin, our senior blog editor has been continuing his interview series with artists. Below are a couple of recent highlights.

Tema Stauffer

Tema Stauffer was born in 1973 and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1995 and received a Master's Degree in Photography from The University of Illinois at Chicago in 1998. She received CAAP grants in 1999 and 2000 for a project photographing dog shows throughout the Midwest. She also contributed a series of photographs shot on ride-alongs with police officers to the CITY2000, an archive of photographs examining the city of Chicago in the year 2000...

Anat Litwin

Anat Litwin is the founder and Artistic Director of the HomeBase Project. The HomeBase Project is an annual site-responsive, community based project exploring the notion of Home. The goal of the project is to cultivate site-specific art projects in non-commercial urban spaces while nurturing artistic communities based on cultural dialog, collaboration and study. The project is designed to take place in gentrified areas, and thus, to engage with the urban environment and wide public. Anat offered her time to answer some of my questions about the HomeBase Project...

Art Basel Steady despite Americans drop-- Collectors from Russia, Asia and the Middle East are taking up the slack of fewer Americans at Switzerland's Art Basel. Bloomberg 06/06/08

A Matter Of Survival - The Arts In A Digital World -- "Countless recent studies have coalesced around the same conclusion: Participation in the performing arts is changing drastically and, in many cases, declining. That decline is even more pronounced among 18- to 24-year-olds." Denver Post 06/08/08

Is Beijing's Boom Creating An Identity Problem? -- Beijing is growing at a dizzying pace, and while progress is presumably to be celebrated as a concept, some are asking whether architectural identity is being sacrificed in the name of speedy modernization. "Are we in danger of replacing one form of cultural imperialism with another?" The Guardian (UK) 06/11/08
